Scott H. Yang: MIT course Challenger _ Transfer

Scott. h. scott H Young, a Canadian on the other side of the ocean, suddenly broke into our field of view, he spent one year on his own completing 33 computer science courses that normally took four years to complete at the MIT open class and eventually passed all the tests.

Why does Scott H. Yang challenge MIT's computer courses? All of this comes from his idea of life: get more from life!

MIT challenge: just an experiment

When Scott decided to use a year to challenge the MIT computer course, some people asked him why he was doing this. Scott's answer was quite simple:

No one likes to learn, but everyone wants to be smarter. Learning, understanding one thing in depth, and feeling smarter are invaluable treasures. After years of punitive formal education, more and more people forget these valuable things ...... I want to complete four years of courses in one year. I admit that I am crazy or arrogant, but the real motivation for my participation in this challenge is that I want to tell people that, quick learning is possible and interesting."

However, unlike most universities in China, the MIT course may be able to temporarily stick to it at the end of the term and then pass the exam. This method does not work in MIT, because the MIT exam has a high requirement on problem-solving skills, and there are often some questions that have not been seen before. At the same time, the MIT course should be step-by-step, even if you are lucky enough to pass an exam, if you do not understand it, the next exam will be the same.

In short, this is an experiment.. However, the cost of this experiment is huge because it takes four years to complete a normal course. However, isn't this the essential qualities of a geeks? It seems impossible for others, but they are trying to make it impossible. It is the existence of these people that make us feel the waves of life.

During the nearly one year from October 1-20, 2011 to September 26, Scott Yang spent full time on MIT's computer science courses. In the first few months, he studied for six days a week (except Saturday), from 6 to 6 every day, the average time spent on challenging the MIT computer course per week is about 60 hours. Later, with the improvement in efficiency and the passing of some courses and exams, the weekly spending on learning will be reduced to 30 to 40 hours. He also shared his daily life patterns during his studies: after getting up in the morning, he started to study for several hours and then spent 30 minutes for lunch breaks. After lunch, he usually kept learning about 5 o'clock, then it is usually a 30-minute break. In addition, he also shared his learning experience:

1. Reading materials.

Scott's 24-year-old birthday on October 13, August 19, 2012, he wrote in his blog:

The challenge of choosing MIT is so far the largest and most ambitious project I have ever performed. It will be a unique experience in my life.

When Scott wrote the above text, his MIT challenge was still in progress. During the challenge, Ted Eastside prep invited him to give a speech at TEDx titled "can you complete MIT education at $2000, scott received more attention and passed his ideas to more people.

Actually, Scott Yang is a blog operator strictly speaking. He has been writing his own blog since he was 18 years old. At that time, he had not yet gone to college because he was interested in behavioral changes and began to create his own blog and record his learning experience. Later, he went to the University of Manitoba in Canada to study business. At the university, Scott began to become interested in socialization and productivity and used them as topics for learning and exploration. As he insisted on recording his learning experience to his blog, Scott's blog now has nearly 900 articles, some free ebook and article on exploring how to learn more from your life. The blog content also grows with Scott's experience. Now the article covers many topics, from productivity to learning skills to meaning of life.

In addition to recording Scott Yang's learning experience, this blog is also his full-time job. At the beginning, Scott only used his blog as a carrier for sharing his learning experience and did not intend to rely on it to make a living. However, in practice, he realized that online businesses would have more opportunities than software/games. So he made a change.

After graduation, his students did not continue to study or work, but Scott's choice surprised his friends because Scott chose to run his blog full-time. He described his career as follows:

When I first started my website, my blog-based career did not even exist. Even now, some people and I are doing similar jobs, but for most people, this job is still not so understandable.

Currently, his blog ranks 56,786th in the world and 26,612nd in the United States. It is not low for individual blogs. However, the whole blog page has no advertisement, because Scott has no intention of making money through advertisement. He sold information products and services in his blog based on his own learning experience. Specifically, he sold some courses and training to learners.

At present, the revenue gained by running this blog has made Scott Yang unable to concentrate on areas of interest for other companies. It can even be said that Scott has the opportunity to spend a year full-time to challenge MIT's computer courses. A large part of the reason is that the income from blogs solves all his worries.

It's learning-hack, not nerd.

A person who takes one year to complete his/her own courses that take four years to complete. According to the logic of some Chinese, I wonder if anyone thinks Scott Yang is a nerd?

Not at all! His philosophy of life is "get more from life". Therefore, no matter what lab activities he performs, he wants to learn more from his life. During his MIT challenge, he was indeed busy with his courses every day and did not even have time to manage his website services. However, he gave himself some hard rules, such as taking a day off on Saturday and having no time to study at night, so that he could spare some time to wander with friends and do some interesting things, the whole person's life will not be lost by the MIT challenge.

Scott did not find a formal job after graduation, which caused some misunderstandings. Scott was very familiar with this. He wrote:

The biggest advantage of running online businesses is that you don't have to explain to others whether this is the case-no venture capitalists, no official licenses, or recruiters tell yourself that I can't do it. Therefore, when someone asks me why I am not looking for a job or I am not a graduate student, I smile and nod ."

When Scott completed his MIT computer course in a year, he didn't get his MIT degree because he neither registered with MIT nor had any material connection with MIT. Scott expected not to have obtained his degree, because he set himself to pass the MIT exam. Scott wrote about his degree:

Our society mistakenly equate knowledge with qualification certification. It is not a good idea to earn a degree, and it is absolutely necessary for many industries. However, because society is so closely like the two, many people forget that knowledge and qualification are two different things.

As a matter of fact, shortly after Scott Yang posted his four-year MIT computer science course status to Reddit, a person from Microsoft wanted to talk to him. However, Scott is not interested in talking at all, because he thinks that the current full-time management of his blog says that the revenue he has earned can maintain all his expenses, and he is happy to do so now, he doesn't want to go to another company.

Scott Yang is also a travel enthusiast and has his own cooking experience. After successfully challenged MIT's computer course, he received the same question from many people: "What is your next goal ?" Scott did not directly answer what he would say about his next challenge, but he said the following things he wanted to do:

• Try more motion. Because I am currently living in the mountains, I can try skiing.
• Write a novel.
• Learn new languages. Spanish is already in my plan, and I would like to stay in Japan for a few months.
• Travel to more places.
• Officially published a book. Although I have already written some e-books, so far I have not officially published a paper book.

Scott is satisfied with his current life. Human behavior has three different driving levels: Demand, status, and happiness. He said that almost all his current plans are about "happiness", and there are very few "demands" or "status. Scott is a good developer. However, he enjoys traveling. He also learned some insights from his travels. He said there are multiple potential associations between travel and learning. Learning is not limited to books, but also about culture, language, and communication between people. Everything is just for "learn more from life ".
