Next, go to the "function Selection" interface and make some decisions. As shown in 1-3, all functions will be installed here, because this will be a development instance, and developers will test all aspects of SQL Server from all ongoing project development. However, you can also choose to install various components as needed. For this book, you need to install "Database Engine service", "Reporting Services", "client tools", and "Business Intelligence Development Studio" used to create reports. Therefore, make sure that at least these features are selected.

Below is a brief description of most components in 1-3.

Database Engine service. This is the core of SQL Server 2008, and the main engine and data files required for installing SQL Server.

SQL Server replication. When you perform data modification on the database, if you not only want to send the modification to the database, in addition, if you want to send the modification to a similar database (this database is created to copy the modification), you can use this option to copy the modification to that database.

Full-text search. This option allows you to search for text in the database.

Analysis Services. You can use this tool to obtain a dataset, cut and slice the data, and analyze the information contained in the dataset.

Reporting Services. This service allows you to generate reports from SQL server without using third-party tools such as crystal report. This component will be detailed in chapter 14th.

Client tool. Some of these tools provide a graphical interface for the client machine to SQL Server, while others work together with SQL Server on the client. This option is suitable for deployment on the developer's machine.

Microsoft sync framework. When working with offline applications (such as applications on mobile devices), some synchronization mechanism must exist in the appropriate place. This option allows these interactions.

SQL Server books online. This is a help system. If you need more information, instructions, or additional details about SQL Server in any aspect, turn to books online.

Business Intelligence Development studio. If you want to use an analysis-based service to analyze data, you can use this graphic user interface to interact with the database. This option is not described in this book.

Integration services. This option allows you to create a process to complete the action, such as importing data from other data sources and using the data. In Chapter 7th, when we consider creating a backup maintenance plan, we will see the actual operation of integration services.

Among the above components, analysis services and business intelligence development studio are beyond the scope of this book. We will only briefly introduce the integration services mentioned here.

Note: At this moment, SQL Server no longer provides the option to install the sample database. Microsoft has also changed the delivery methods of sample databases and samples. Therefore, you can find the updated version on the SQL Server website (http://www.microsoft.com/sqlor http://www.codeplex.com/sqlserversamples.
