VVNX Professional Storage Device Virtualization

At the World Congress, EMC announced the Project Liberty Program, which focuses on hardware and software decoupling and virtualization deployment of professional storage devices. Currently, EMC has released the VVNX virtualization Community version and provided free download links. VVNX is a virtualization-based, industry-leading VNX Array (VVNX) that enables users to enjoy VNX's rich data services, manageability, and rich user experience, while VVNX makes deployment of development and test systems flexible and simple. Users can also reduce procurement and hardware and software costs while using VNX to store professional storage services.

Project Liberty offers free download of virtualized versions vvnx,vvnx in an open virtualization device ova/ovf, ova/ovf like an open virtual machine template that can easily be transformed between different hypervisor to a corresponding VM for deployment. The downloaded VVNX OVA is deployed on VMware via a virtual Storage array (VSA) virtual machine, and VSA transforms the deployed VM instance through OVA, providing storage services and supporting only single-instance deployments.

The architecture of the VVNX architecture is similar to Vnxe, with an integrated storage architecture that supports both NAS and SAN storage protocols and services, support for snapshots and remote replication, and other value-added features like Vnx.

VVNX software needs to be installed in a VMware environment (with X86 architecture and local disks), VVNX software can be easily deployed on VMware ESX Server via Vcenter, and the VSA network is configured via Vcenter. EMC recommends storage options thick provisioning, but Vvnx also supports thin provisioning mode in order to provide more visible storage space.

Because Vvnx is based on VMware virtualization technology, VVNX is not aware of the underlying disk, so the type of vdisk needs to be specified manually by the user. Unisphere is EMC storage configuration and management software, and Unisphere provides the ability to monitor and manage vvnx-like professional storage. Some limitations of VVNX

• FAST Cache is not currently supported and cannot be accelerated by SSD for read-write cache data.

• Recoverpoint also does not support the implementation of CDP and Recoverpoint-based data replication together with VVNX.

• Ha for controllers: Because VVNX currently employs single-instance deployments, it is not possible to implement a dual-control ha function like Vnx.

• VVNX software Upgrade: Unable to do the same online upgrade as VNX, VVNX upgrade requires a restart of VSA.

• Front-End FC interface support: Because VVNX is based on VMware implementations, FC San support is not yet implemented.
