Seven questions about connection to the wireless network

Imagine a scenario: You have bought a laptop that supports wireless networks, sitting in an airport, hotel, or cafe where wireless broadband is supported and your computer can access the Internet ......

Your computer shows on the screen that it does find a wireless broadband connection. However, although it is detected, it is actually unable to connect to the network through it.

This is not uncommon when using wireless networks. In fact, to connect a laptop to a wireless network, the program in the middle is more complex than you think. To access the Internet, you must go through some twists and turns in the middle of the software and settings, which makes the wireless laptop should be provided immediately, the accessibility of the connection is greatly reduced.

What are the possible problems? Let's take a look one by one:

Question 1

You forgot to open your browser. Ideally, a wireless broadband connection works like this: After you open your laptop, a dialog box or toolbar icon (in Windows) displays information about the wireless broadband connection. You press "Connect" and then you can access the Internet.

In fact, in many venues, libraries, hotel halls and schools, there is no Internet access. How beautiful life is.

However, some wireless broadband connections that require payment-those that may pay daily or monthly-are not directly accessible through email or chat. On the contrary, you must first open your browser, such as Internet Explorer, Safari, or Firefox (some free Web browsers will require you to open the browser first ). Even if you only want to check your e-mail, you still need to open the browser first. If you do not know this, you may encounter many problems that cannot be used without an online network.

Once you open your browser, you will see the web page of the wireless broadband connection. For example, a T-Mobile web page appears at Starbucks in the United States or at many airports, while Wayport web pages appear at many hotels or other airports. Enter your credit card number or log on to your existing account.

It is worth noting that these wireless broadband connection companies often have roaming agreements. For example, if you have an AT&T or BT Wireless Network account, select your company on the roaming menu provided by T-Mobile to connect.

In this way, you can access the Internet using browsers, email programs, chat software, and other network functions.

Question 2

You have not connected to the webpage. To connect to a non-Online Network, you must connect to a specific webpage. However, some people set the browser to open blank pages at the beginning, rather than starting a page. In this way, the laptop cannot connect to the network. If your browser starts with a blank page, you can try to connect to a webpage-any webpage-to facilitate computer connection to the Internet. A page without an online network will appear, not the page you requested.

Question 3

The non-Online Network in this area is not used by the general public. Sometimes your laptop can be "seen" and connected to a wireless base station, but you cannot see the login page or send emails. In this case, you enter an intranet instead of a public network. The person who set this wireless base station deliberately disabled a DNS function, and the DNS service allows external users to connect to the network.

You may also encounter a wireless network that is not connected to the Internet. It may be just a group of computers connected to each other's internal network. For example, it may only be used to play interconnected games, or allow Conference participants to communicate with each other during meetings.

If you click computer technology, you can quickly confirm the problem: Observe the IP address of your laptop. If you are using an Apple Computer, open a program named "network performance" under your "performance" information folder. If it is a Windows system, select "run" in the Start menu and Enter cmd. Then, enter ipconfig/all in the output column. if you join a closed network, you will see the IP address starting with 169.254-for example, 169.254.1.5

Brian J Epson, editor of wireless technology and co-author of "Linux Unwired", said: "This is like a sign of" forbidden access ". You have to find another way to access the Internet ."

Question 4

You need a password. Recently, no password is required for free or commercial use in many areas without online networks. (You will find a password input window on the screen)

You can know the password when you ask. Sometimes you have to spend money. For example, you have to pay for the service desk at a hotel to get the password. Sometimes, passwords are used to block passers-by like you from using their internal networks. Naturally, many network designers even hide the entire signal, so your computer cannot even find these base stations.

Question 5

The base station is broken. If your laptop sees a non-online network connection, it may also be caused by incorrect settings of the base station. If you can find the person in charge-for example, the person at the Hotel Service Desk-and try to persuade him to restart the wireless network base station, the problem may be solved. In some cases, there will be a free phone number tag on the base platform. You can call the person in charge of this wireless network. The guy sitting in the remote office answering the phone may know how to solve your problem.

Question 6

Conscience. Assume that your laptop is very happy to report that you can find a device named "Default" or "LinkSys" without an online network (this is a typical Default name for a new wireless network device, it will not change unless it is changed)

In general coffee shops, the name of a coffee shop is often used without online network connections. "Ask the clerk at the counter," J Epson said. "If they look at you with a strange expression, it means that no online network is probably not there, not what they provide ."

This is often because some people have poor luck and their wireless network signals pass through the walls-these people may not, or may not, change their names without online networks. The only problem with connecting to these networks is moral: Should you use others' stupidity to enjoy free Internet connections?

(If you intentionally set up such a non-Online Network for the convenience of passers-by, and to avoid others' confusions, you can name it like "XXX free Internet access)

Question 7

Suppose you are in Boston, USA. Your laptop finds a wireless network called South Station, which means you must have a terminal network at the Station of South Station in Boston. Yes, you can access the Internet, but it is not the internet you are used. In fact, he is a small website with only a few pages about the South Station, and its history and characteristics. Because you entered an e-Community lab website sponsored by Michael Oh, a local wireless network investor.

This does not mean that you cannot access the Internet. You can connect to the commercial wireless network provided by South Station to access the Internet.
