Share Internet access in Windows XP

"Internet Connection Sharing" has appeared in Windows 98 (SE)/ME/2000 and is now improved and enhanced in Windows XP. It allows multiple PCs in the LAN, one of the PCs connected to the Internet is used to connect to the Internet, so that multiple PCs can share an Internet connection line and provide firewall protection.

Because there are many network structures for Internet sharing, which cannot be listed one by one, two typical network structures are selected here to introduce Windows XP's "Internet Connection Sharing ".

1. There are more than two PCs in the LAN, and the Internet access mode is broadband access.

1. The network structure is as follows:

  

Note: The gateway host is equipped with two NICs, in which the NIC A1 is connected to the Internet through ADSL, cable modem, or Ethernet ports (more frequently used in broadband residential areas, smart commercial buildings, and campus networks, nic A2 is connected to a hub or vswitch and is in the same LAN as pC1 and pc2. Each of pC1 and PC2 is equipped with a network adapter that is connected to a hub or vswitch. In the LAN, the network is connected to the Internet through the shared gateway host. If a PC is added to the LAN, you only need to connect the new PC to the hub or switch to access the Internet.

2. gateway host settings

The operating system is Windows XP, "Start"-> "Control Panel"-> "network and Internet connection"-> "network connection", the connection icons of the two NICs are displayed.

  

"Local Area Connection 1" is the network card A1, connected to the Internet; "Local Area Connection 2" is the network card A2, connected to the LAN. The TCP/IP setting of "Local Area Connection 1" varies depending on different broadband access methods. You can automatically obtain the IP address and DNS, you can also configure a fixed IP address and DNS (provided by the ISP). You should configure the IP address and DNS according to the instructions provided by the ISP.

Next we will share the Internet connection, right-click "Local Area Connection 1"-> "properties"-> "advanced ", select "Internet Connection Firewall" and "Internet Connection Sharing,

  

Press "OK". A dialog box is displayed, prompting you to change the TCP/IP settings of the other Nic. Press "yes ".

  

In this way, the sharing is enabled, and the NIC icon looks like this.

  

Now let's check the TCP/IP Settings of "Local Area Connection 2", right-click "Local Area Connection 2"-> "property"-> "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) "->" property ", the IP address is set to 192.168.0.1 by the system.

  

This IP address can be changed according to the specific requirements of the local area network users. However, in this example, we will not modify the IP address. In this case, exit this dialog box as instructed. After the gateway host is configured, the Internet connection is shared and the firewall function is available to protect all machines in the LAN from unauthorized access.

3. Configure pC1 in LAN

The operating system can be any network operating system, in addition to the Windows series, or Linux or UNIX. You only need to set the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS of the NIC. The IP address is set to the address in the same subnet as the gateway host Nic A2, but cannot be duplicated. The subnet mask is the same as that of the gateway host Nic A2, the default gateway and DNS are the IP addresses of the NIC A2 of the gateway host. For Windows XP, follow the settings.

  

After confirming, you can access the Internet by enabling IE, provided that the gateway host is connected to the Internet.

4. Configure PC2 in LAN

The settings of Pc2 are basically the same as those of pC1, but the IP address is different. In the preceding example, the IP address of pC1 is 192.168.0.2, so the IP address of Pc2 can be set to 192.168.0.3, as long as it is an IP address that has never been used in the subnetwork.

5. Firewall settings in the gateway host

If the gateway host enables the Remote Desktop (as described in Windows XP Remote experience) and the firewall is enabled, other online users on the Internet cannot remotely log on to your system, but if you want an expert to remotely log on to any PC in the local area network (including the gateway host, this PC must have the Remote Desktop function). If you want to solve the problem by yourself, perform the following operations: (using the gateway host as an example) right-click "Local Area Connection 1"-> "properties"-> "advanced"-> "Settings", select "Remote Desktop ",

  

Enter the IP address or computer name of the machine to be accessed by an expert, and press "OK" three times. Then, the expert can log on to any PC in the local area network through the firewall.

  

In the same way, you can control whether the Web service or FTP service of the LAN can be opened to the outside, as long as you select different services as you did just now.

2. There are only two PCs in the LAN, and the Internet access method is normal dialing.

Note: The gateway host is connected to a common MODEM connected to a telephone line and also has a nic. PC1 is also equipped with a network card. Two network cards are connected by a crossover line (there are many articles about the crossover line practice on the Internet) to form the simplest lan. pC1 shares the Internet connection of the gateway host to access the Internet. This network structure is not suitable for expansion.

2. gateway host settings

The operating system is Windows XP. The vast majority of modem will be automatically recognized and installed by the system. Next we will create a new dial-up connection: "Start"-> "Control Panel"-> "network and Internet connection"-> "network connection"-> "Create a new connection"-> "Next"->" connect to the Internet "->" Next "->" manually set my connections "->" Next "->" connect with a dial-up modem "->" Next "-> enter ISP name: china Telecom 96169-> "Next"-> enter the dialing phone number, such as 96169-> "Next"-> enter the user name and password-> "Next"-> "complete ". There is a dial-up icon in the network connection.

  

To share this Internet connection, you only need to right-click the dial icon-> "property"-> "advanced", and the subsequent settings will be the same as described in Case 1, including the settings of the NIC connected to the LAN.

3. Lan PC Configuration

The settings of the firewall are the same as those of pC1 in Case 1. After the gateway host has dial-up Internet access, this small LAN Internet sharing mode can work.
