Shared network connection in Windows 2000

In Microsoft's earlier Windows operating systems, we generally use proxy server software such as Wingate and Sygate for shared connections. Windows 2000 provides us with the Internet sharing feature, which is easier to use and easier to set. It is suitable for small office and home networks.

Setting up network sharing in Windows 2000 is simple. The process is as follows:

Server Settings

1. on the server side, establish an Internet connection through the Internet Connection Service.

2. Go to the control panel and run "network and dial-up connection ".

3. In "network and dial-up connections", right-click the Internet Connection established in 1 and select "properties ".

4. On the "properties" Settings panel, select the "share" Page and select "Enable Internet Connection Sharing for this connection ".

If you want other computers on the network to dial a computer that is shared on the Internet, you can select "enable request dialing" and then click "yes" in the pop-up window ", now the server has been set up.

Client settings

1. on the client, set the TCP/IP bound to the network card to automatically obtain the IP address.

2. in the Internet connection settings of the browser, select "Never dial-up connection", and then select "LAN Settings". In "automatic configuration, clear the check boxes for "Automatic Detection Settings" and "use automatic configuration script", and clear the "use proxy server" check box in "Proxy Server". The client configuration is complete.

It can be seen that the setting process is still very simple. After we select the Internet shared connection of Windows 2000, the changes in the server are almost completely transparent to users, the main change is that the IP address of the TCP/IP bound to the NIC is changed to 192.168.0.1, And the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. In addition, the DHCP Allocator and DNS proxy are automatically enabled.

It should be noted that this function should not be used with the domain controller, DNS server, gateway, DHCP server, or the system configured as a static IP address. If such a component is needed, you must use network address translation to get the same result.
