${string#substring}

The shortest matching $substring is truncated from the beginning of the $string.

${string# #substring}

The longest matching $substring is truncated from the beginning of the $string.

${string%substring}

The shortest matching $substring is truncated from the end of the $string.

${string%%substring}

The longest matching $substring is truncated from the end of the $string.

These operations are especially useful when you need to construct a file name.
