Silverlight is not used for on-demand video streaming on MSN.

According to foreign news, the micro-soft MSN video service has been expanding. Starting from next week, it will provide online free on-demand TV series services for British netizens. It is said that Silverlight technology is not used in the initial stage.

This service will be provided free of charge and Microsoft will earn revenue through video ads. The apsaravideo for VOD service will be launched next Monday and will initially include more than 300 hours of TV series. Microsoft said it would continue to negotiate with British television stations and video agencies to obtain more content.

Media initially provided programs for Microsoft, including BBC Worldwide, the commercial unit of BBC, and all3media.

On-demand video streaming for online TV series uses two file formats: WMV (Windows Media video) and flash, which support windows and Apple users. In addition, at least in the beginning, Microsoft will not enable its own Silverlight technology to challenge flash monopoly.

At present, the MSN video service provided to British netizens mainly includes music videos, sports videos and news videos, with a short length. TV series is the first long program launched by MSN in the UK. According to a survey, MSN videos rank fifth among similar network services in the UK.

In addition, all on-demand TV series do not have additional DRM (Digital Copyright Protection) measures, but only IP addresses from the UK can watch.

Media Analysis believes that the TV series on demand of MSN will compete with the BBC's iPlayer podcast service. The US video website Hulu is currently preparing to launch the UK version, which is expected to be available in May.
