Simple mathematical operations using NaSC on Ubuntu and Elementary OS

NaSC, Not a Soulver Clone, is a third-party application developed for the elementary operating system. As the name implies, NaSC is inspired by Soulver, which is an OS X application for mathematical computing like ordinary people.

Elementary OS itself draws on OS x, so it is not surprising that many of its third-party applications are inspired by OS X applications.

Back to NaSC, what does "Mathematical computing like ordinary people" mean? In fact, it means writing as you want. According to the application introduction:

"It allows you to perform computation as usual. It allows you to input anything you want, intelligently recognize the mathematical section, and print the result on the right panel. Then you can use these results in the following equations. If the results change, the same changes will be used in the equations ."

Don't believe it yet? Let's look at one.

Now, do you understand what is "doing mathematics just like ordinary people? Frankly speaking, I am not a fan of such applications, but it may be useful to some of you. Let's take a look at how to install NaSC on Elementary OS, Ubuntu, and Linux Mint.

Install NaSC on Ubuntu, Elementary OS, and Mint

Installing NaSC has an available PPA. PPA is 'day', meaning daily build (meaning, unstable), but as my quick test, there is no impact.

Open a terminal and run the following command:

  1. sudo apt-add-repository ppa:nasc-team/daily
  2. sudoapt-get update
  3. sudoapt-get install nasc

This is one of the NaSC versions used in Ubuntu 15.04:

To uninstall it, run the following command:

  1. sudoapt-get remove nasc
  2. sudo apt-add-repository --remove ppa:nasc-team/daily

If you try this software, share your experience. In addition, you can also experience Vocal podcast app for Linux in a third-party Elementary OS application.
