Linux has many release versions, each having its own characteristics. out of habit, we need Windows. Out of study or understanding, we sometimes need to install several Linux sets. Since Linux's LILO functions are powerful enough, we will discuss how to install the Win98 dual-Linux system without using third-party software.
Computer hardware and software configuration: CPU P233, memory 64 M, main hard disk seagate3.2 g, from the hard disk quantum540M (connected to the main disk on a data cable), optical drive sony 8X,
Operating System: Windows 98, surfing platform Xteam Linux1.0, Red Hat Redhat Linux6.0.
Hard Disk Partition status: the primary partition is 1.2 GB (FAT32), and Win98 is installed. The extended partition is 200 MB (FAT16), and important data is backed up. The remaining GB is reserved for Xteam Linux; leave the disk 540M to Redhat linux.
1. Install Xteam Linux on the master disk
Set the system to be started by CDROM, put it into the Xteam installation disk, install Xteam Linux in the main disk (hda) in the usual way, write LILO to the main disk (hda) when installing LILO) master Boot Record. do not occupy the disk (hdb) space.
2. Install Redhat Linux on the slave Disk
The Linux installer can directly find the hard disk by skipping BIOS settings. To prevent Linux from finding the primary disk, shut down and unplug the data cable from the primary disk. Start with Redhat and install Redhat Linux on the slave disk (hdb. Note that you cannot install LILO in "Master Boot Record" when installing LILO. It must be installed in "First Sector of Boot Partition ". In the future, LILO on the primary disk will call the boot command from the linux partition on the disk.
3. Install LILO on the master disk
Reconnect the data cable of the primary disk. Run mount-t ext2/dev/hdb1/mnt to install from disk to/mnt; cp/mnt/boot/vmlinuz-2.0.36-0.7/boot, copy the Redhat kernel image file vmlinuz-2.0.36-0.7 to/boot; unmount from the disk umount/mnt. Compare the lilo. conf of the two Linux systems, and modify the/etc/lilo. conf file as follows:
Boot =/dev/hda
Map =/boot/map
Install =/boot. B
Prompt
Timeout = 50
Other =/dev/hda1
Label = dos
Table =/dev/hda
Image =/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.2-1
Label = xteam
Root =/dev/hda3
Read-only
Image =/boot/vmlinuz-2.0.36-0.7
Label = redhat
Root =/dev/hdb1
Read-only
Run the lilo command to write the modified LILO configuration to the Master Boot Record.
Restart the computer. Press the Tab at LILO: to view the dos/xteam/redhat options, and enter Win98/Xteam/Redhat.
