SIP integrated multimedia communication

It is widely believed that Converged Multimedia will continue the development of SMS by providing services covering access and network domains. These services can be categorized into presentation, information processing and notification, collaboration, Web Push, and a wide range of audio and video services. These services will be provided on multiple access domains in a personalized and integrated manner. From the operator's perspective, they need to quickly create these new businesses and provide maximum flexibility in the billing and setting fields.

The technology used to provide these integrated and integrated services is called the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP ). It is an IP-based protocol defined by the IETF working group. In addition, the 3GPP standard organization has used SIP as the main protocol for the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) domain when developing the UMTSR5 standard. This Protocol is completely independent from access, business, and traffic. That is to say, operators can use any access technology (GPRS, UMTS, WLAN, xDSL, etc.) to deploy any business, end users can establish any types of voice, information processing, and collaboration ). The flexibility and simplicity of SIP will enable operators to provide low-bandwidth services, such as demonstration and instant information processing, through GPRS after they invest in the deployment of this technology, and quickly expand the business scope through higher bandwidth provided by UMTS.

Technical definition

The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a plain text-based signaling protocol that manages different access networks. SIP is responsible for starting, modifying, and terminating calls. A session may be any type of communication between devices. It can be a video session, a real-time message processing session, or a collaborative session. In any case, this protocol does not define or restrict the services used. In addition, transmission, QoS, billing, and security issues are all handled by the basic core network and other protocols.

As a future protocol, the SIP protocol is favored by many users and is strongly supported by Microsoft, AOL and other vendors, IETF, 3GPP, and other standard-setting institutions.

A network that supports SIP provides a bridge that expands the potential of providing integrated services to various devices in the Internet and wireless networks. This will allow operators to provide a large number of advanced information processing services for their mobile users, and communicate with other fixed users and 2G wireless users through SMS.

SIP is also a signaling protocol used in UMTS 3GPP R5/R6, so the operator can ensure that the current investment can be reused in the future.

Technical advantages of SIP

Independent from access: SIP is a pure signaling protocol, so it can be used to establish a channel with any type of access network. This means that the protocol can be used in GPRS, UMTS and other access networks. It also adds the advantage of enabling operators to use other protocols, such as ATM, service type (CoS), and differential services, to provide service quality or Radius accounting for billing. In any case, this protocol does not limit the use of other protocols to provide other services, such as ip vpn, firewall, and content-based billing.

Voice and Business independence: In any case, the SIP does not limit or define the types of words that can be established. Multiple channels of multiple media types can be used for switching between terminal devices. Moreover, the Protocol does not limit the definition of services provided to users. For example, a carrier can define and develop a SIP protocol that is not affected by services and content.

Protocol convergence: In today's wireless networks, many different protocols are designed to provide different services. For example, the GSM voice service is provided by the DTAP4.08 protocol, the information processing is provided by SMS/MMS, and the video service in the UMTS network is provided by the H.324M protocol. In addition, the network is still divided into two domains: Circuit Switching and group switching. SIP is a fusion protocol that provides all services in the group exchange domain. It also unifies the fixed and wireless fields.

Commercial Value of SIP Business Opportunities: new integrated multimedia services can be deployed in separate domains such as GPRS, UMTS, xDSL, and WLAN. Therefore, even before the release of 3GPP R5, operators can also generate revenue. Operators can start to provide services such as display and instant information processing through GPRS, and expand the potential of these services as the bandwidth increases.

Cost efficiency: Because SIP is an independent access protocol, wireless operators will need to invest in the construction of various access network infrastructure for their operation. In addition, Because SIP increases the Protocol convergence advantage, it will allow operators to reduce the number of protocols required to provide services.

Interconnection: many leading vendors and large operators choose SIP as a multimedia protocol for providing integrated services on a universal network. This agreement is favored by everyone and will ensure fast interoperability between infrastructure suppliers, application developers and end providers, which means it can bring revenue opportunities for operators and reduce their costs.
