Enterprise-level computing is mainly focused on making use of computing resources as efficiently as possible by obtaining the optimal performance of each server resource. There are many technologies that can help you configure HP enterprise servers to meet the vast majority of your needs, as well as adjust your configurations to adapt to changes in computing needs without affecting your business. HP collectively referred to these technologies as virtualization technologies. These technologies can be used to combine and split physical computing resources into custom virtual resources, so as to adjust the size of these resources reasonably, to achieve the highest efficiency.

Because there are many ways to configure system and network resources, it may be a bit difficult to decide which technology (or a combination of multiple technologies) is best suited to your needs. This series of articles discusses many of the major Virtualization Technologies provided by HP-UX and describes the resources that can be configured with these technologies and their associations.

First, let's take a look at HP's classification of Virtualization Technologies. here we can see that partitioning is only one of the six Virtualization Technologies. From the perspective of HP-UNIX, virtualization technology and its related products can be divided into six basic categories based on the number of cores, servers and the number of operating system instances involved. Figure 2-1 "virtualization technology categories" shows these categories and their relationships with processing core, servers, and operating system instances.

Example:

-- A single operating system running on a single processor/Single Core (1 P/1C) Server is an independent system (or a single node network ).

-- Partition technology is used for multiple operating systems running on one multi-core server.

-- An operating system running across multiple servers indicates cluster technology. From a technical point of view, each server runs its own operating system, but they seem to be the same as running an instance across multiple servers.

The additional articles in the series discuss various virtualization categories and introduce which HP-UX technologies should be used when the system needs to be configured to take advantage of each category. This article introduces the first method: independent system (one single-core server and one operating system instance)
