Since this series of articles is named "Smart Home", we need to propose a concept related to smart home. This concept was mentioned at a TI wireless seminar. Whether it was proposed by TI or by other wireless manufacturers, this will not be further investigated. This concept is embedded WIFI, and there is also an IoT (Internet of Things) solution called WIFI. What is the difference between it and ordinary WIFI? Continue to read the following.

1. Source of embedded WIFI

We all know that such products as laptops, mobile phones, and tablets have powerful CPU and large-capacity storage for processing and storing network communication data. Therefore, no extra MCU is required when using WIFI, it relies entirely on its high-speed processor and a large software system. However, for household appliances, instruments, LED lights, and other smart home products, the main control chip of such products may be MCU with low costs and simple functions. Therefore, such products cannot support common Wi-Fi functions. At the same time, another important reason is that the power consumption of ordinary WIFI is relatively high, while embedded WIFI greatly improves the power consumption, which is more suitable for wireless appliance devices with high power consumption requirements.

Based on the above reasons, wireless manufacturers have successively launched embedded WIFI modules. The embedded Wi-Fi module features high hardware and software integration. The entire embedded Wi-Fi module integrates RF transceiver, MAC, WIFI driver, all WIFI protocols, wireless security protocols, one-click connection, and so on. In short, one sentence: Embedded WIFI should be born of the Internet of Things!

Next we will compare embedded WIFI with ordinary WIFI. Through the comparison in the following table, we can generally understand what embedded WIFI is.

2. Comparison between embedded WIFI and common WIFI

Embedded WIFI Module

Common WIFI Module

Applicability

Smart Home devices such as wireless appliances, instruments, and smart bulbs

Laptops, mobile phones, tablets, etc.

Master Chip

MCU integrated on the module

High-speed microprocessor such as x86 CPU and ARM

Interface

UART, SPI, I2C, SDIO

USB, SDIO

Power Consumption

Low

High

Product

TI CC3200 series, MXCHIP series, ASIX series, HF-LPA series of Atheros, etc.

Referer RTL81xx series, Weisheng VT series, Referer RT series, Broadcom BCM, Marvell, Qualcomm Atheros, etc.

Development and Design

Built-in WIFI driver, MAC, WIFI protocol, wireless security protocol, etc. All network software is encapsulated into a UART or SPI interface device, which is easy to use, you only need to send and receive data to UART or SPI. From the overall software perspective, it is not a network device.

You need to add a Wi-Fi driver to the host, and depend on the network protocol stack of the host and other software platform resources. From the overall software level, it is a network device and must follow network-related protocols for use.

Just like this! First, let's take a brief look at the basic concepts. Later, we will analyze the technical principles in detail.

Zigbee and wifi are used in different smart home services. Which of the following is the best? What is the best choice I want to invest in R & D?

We recommend using zigbee for Smart Home

ZigBee-WiFi comparison and advantages:
Hardware Memory Requirements comparison: ZigBee: 32 ~ 64 kB +; WiFi: 1 MB +; low ZigBee hardware requirements.
Battery power-on duration comparison: ZigBee: 100 ~ 1000 days; WiFi: 1 ~ 5 days; low ZigBee power consumption.
Transmission Distance comparison (general usage, no high-power antenna TRANSMITTER): ZigBee: 1 ~ 1000 M; WiFi: 1 ~ 100 M; ZigBee transmission distance is long.

ZigBee disadvantages:
Network bandwidth comparison: ZigBee: 20 ~ 250KB/s (<250 Kbps); WiFi: 11000KB/s (11 Mbps); low ZigBee bandwidth, slow transmission.

Smart Home System wifi is different from Zigbee

As a general wireless transmission technology, Wi-Fi is mature and has rich products. There are many advantages, such as high transmission rate and wide bandwidth. There are also some disadvantages. establishing connections and authentication is cumbersome and time-consuming.

ZIGBEE has never been widely used. The biggest advantage is that it can be switched over, And the node can play a relay role to transmit data to the next farther node. The disadvantage is also obvious, and the bandwidth is seriously insufficient. The disadvantage that comes along with the advantage is that the key node fails, and all subsequent nodes will be affected.

The wi-fi frequency is 2.4 GB. Zigbee can be used at multiple frequencies. The open frequencies in Europe, the United States, and Asia vary according to different regions, but the 2.4G is widely used globally.
