I upgraded from Ubuntu7.04 to 7.10, and I started Ubuntu7. 10. In the directory folder or document on the desktop (or web browser), press the top function key F2 to rename the file, you can only start Gedit and enter a new category name in it. Copy the string and then click and paste it with your mouse after pressing F2, but I thought there was a problem with my installation.
I upgraded from Ubuntu7.04 to 7.10, and I started Ubuntu7. 10 directory or document on the desktop (or web browser)
Press the function key F2 to rename the current time.
You cannot enter any text at all. You can only start Gedit and enter a new file name in it to copy the string.
Then press F2 on the file to be named on the desktop and click and paste it with your mouse.
But I thought there was a problem with my installation.
However, a positive solution is found. The setting method of the positive solution is as follows:
On the desktop, click any folder, press F2, right-click the mouse, and the input method appears,
Select "SCIM Input Method ",
I wrote "preset" on the graph, but the test result just showed that if "preset" is selected ",
You can only enter English letters. Therefore, it is not applicable if you want to rename the name with Chinese characters.
Therefore, select "SCIM Input Method"
<嗯 , 据说 gcin 不会有这种问题 我没测过所以不敢肯定的说 ...>
Then go back to the desktop, press F2, and then the keyboard can finally directly enter the string to be renamed...

I recreated the same situation. Here is the fix
Right Click on the file on desktop or in filemanager
Click on Rename option
Again right click inside the filename and select Input Method.
Mine works when default or SCIM is selected
Hope this helps
You do not need to execute gksudo unless there are some settings in the middle...
Unless you use the browser, you can directly change the name of the directory or to another directory that requires root permission,
Otherwise, I don't think I need...
Just execute the instructions above...
