Update information:Microsoft found a problem in the final internal version of SP4. If you enable the awe Support feature when running SQL Server, it will be affected. This issue has no impact on the IA64 platform. On x86 and x64 systems, this issue affects only users who have enabled awe and occupied more than 2 GB of memory (applicable only to Enterprise, developer, and evaluation versions ); more than half of the system's total memory is allocated to a single SQL server instance.Users with this configuration should obtain and apply the patches specified in Article 899761 of the Microsoft Knowledge Base after upgrading to SP4.Program.

The following is Article 899761 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Symptom

If address processing wing Extentions (AWE) is enabled, a single SQL Server 2000 instance can only use up to 50% of the physical memory on the computer.

Note:: This issue occurs only in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4, which runs on x86 or x64-based computers.

For example, if your computer has 16 gb ram and awe is enabled, a single instance of SQL Server 2000 can only access 8 GB RAM.

To determine whether awe is enabled, run the following script from the SQL query Analyzer:

Sp_configure 'show advanced options', 1goreconfiguregosp_configure 'awe enabled' go

IfRun_valueIf this parameter is set to 1, awe is enabled on the server.

To view this phenomenon, check the "SQL SERVER: Memory Manager/total server memory (Kb)" counter in the system monitor. On a computer running SQL Server Service Pack 3 (SP3), this value can be the maximum amount of physical memory on the computer. On a computer running SQL Server SP4, this value will never exceed 50% of the physical memory.

Note:

This problem only occurs on a computer with more than 2 gb ram.
If awe memory is usedMax Server MemoryIf the value of the option is set to 50% lower than the physical memory, it will not be affected.
Awe is not available in all versions of SQL Server 2000. For example, awe is unavailable for MSDE, SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition, SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition, or installation that only contains SQL Server 2000 tools.
If you run SQL Server 2000 SP4 on a IA-64-bit system, this issue is not affected.
Cause

This problem occurs because the total number of available buffer pages is based on the comparison of the number of SQL pages (8 KB) and system pages (4 kb, the comparison result is incorrect. On the IA-64 BIT system, because this comparison is not performedCodeTherefore, this problem does not occur. Solution
