Some PowerPoint troubles

If you have worked in a Western world Office in the past 25 years, you may be sitting in front of a PowerPoint presentation. But there is a problem here. In the words of Max Atkinson, slides are boring.

Over the past 25 years, I have asked hundreds of people how many thrilling and enthusiastic slides they have seen. The vast majority of people think of an example. The most optimistic answer I have ever heard is "two ".

So what are the main problems?

The screen attracts everyone's attention

Please pay attention to anyone who says he just wants to talk to some slides-because that's exactly what he is going to do-never realize that they spent most of their time using him. back to the audience.

However, eye contact is still the basis for capturing the attention of the audience. Even talented speakers like Barack Obama need an automatic prompt machine to simulate such communication.

In some cases, even Obama needs an automatic prompt.

So remember, the more pages you have, the more pages you have on the east and west, then the audience will be more distracted-but fewer and simpler slides will make it easy for the audience to listen to you all the time.

Concurrent reading and listening can easily distract the audience

If there is nothing on the screen except words, people will try to read the text at the same time and listen to the speaker's explanation-often doing so will only lead to poor performance in both things.

If the font is too small to read, they will be annoyed by what you expect to do impossible things. And the speaker said "just like what you see" or "you may not see this", which is equally annoying, is useless.

The slides are not just notes.

At the beginning, few speakers were willing to open their mouths and say something, unless they saw their first slide on the screen. However, slides are often the verbal crutches of the speaker, rather than the visual help of the audience.

Some slides failed to attract attention

The projection on one slide page looks like you have prepared for this demonstration. However, if you do not accurately plan what you want to say, you will start to speak casually. If you say something disorganized, the audience will just turn off the speaker.

In order to avoid such incidents, you must carefully prepare them. Do this before thinking about the various slides, and you will not need that many slides-those slides you decide to use are more likely to help you clarify the center for the audience, instead of simply reminding yourself what you are going to say.

Information Overload

Do you think that listing points can make information easier to digest? Consider it again. There are 12 slides and each has 5 highlights. It is assumed that people can accept a list of 60 highlights in their minds. If this is a 30-minute demonstration, It is the speed of 2 points per minute.

This looks like a pretty interesting visual tip

This indicates the biggest problem with the slides page-based presentation: the Speaker mistakenly thinks that people can get more information than the actual slides. The core of this issue is that people mistakenly want to distinguish between speaking and listening, and between reading and writing. In fact, it can be proved that the invention is the most important road sign in IT history. Before writing, the amount of information that can be transmitted to others is limited by what can only be communicated in verbal form. However, the ability to write means that a large amount of knowledge can be communicated in a meticulous manner that was previously unimaginable. The problem is that PowerPoint makes it so easy for people to put detailed information or numbers on the slides, this allows the presenter to mistakenly think that all details can be smoothly passed into the mind of the audience through the air.

Confusion in listing key points

A Microsoft executive recently said that he had not listed many highlights on any page in the best PowerPoint presentation he had ever seen. This is not surprising to me, because we have known for so many years that the audience does not like many text pages and do not regard these pages as graphical help. To my surprise, there are still so many standard templates that invite users to list key points, although the main benefit of the program is the creation of images. If more speakers use the benefits of this program, the exciting PowerPoint presentation may become a standard, not just a few exceptions.
