Specify the licensing server for Windows Server R2

In Windows Server R2 Terminal Services, you can manually specify an authorization server, whereas in Windows Server R2, you can specify the licensing server by default only through the Remote Desktop Connection Services Manager, and you want to use Remote Desktop Connection Services Manager. You need to install a series of components, but most of the time, we just want to configure a "Remote Desktop Session Host", do not want to install the "Remote Desktop Gateway Service", "Remote Desktop Web Proxy" These components, then there is no way with Windows Server R2, Manually specify an authorization server for the Remote Desktop Session Host for Windows Server R2? In this example, the domain name of Active directory is the IP address of the Heuet.com,active directory server is 172.16.17.1, we have installed the RD Licensing service on this host, and have installed the license. There is another Windows Server R2 in the network, has joined the domain, and installed the RD Session Host service, next we specify "RD Licensing host" on this Windows Server R2.

(1) On the computer that you are preparing to use as an RD Session host, open Server Manager, and select Add roles and features, as shown in 1-1.

(2) In the Select Installation Type dialog box, select Role-based or feature-based installation, as shown in 1-2.

(3) In the Select Role Services dialog box, select Remote Desktop Services, as shown in 1-3.

(4) In the Remote Desktop services → Select role Services dialog box, select Remote Desktop Session Host, as shown in 1-4.

(5) After the installation is complete, restart, after entering the system again, open the RD licensing diagnostics, you can see that the current Remote Desktop Session host does not specify the RD Licensing service, 1-5 is shown.

Next on this computer, perform gpedit.msc, modify Group Policy, and the main steps are as follows.

(1) Open the Local Group Policy Editor, in computer Configuration → administrative Templates →windows components → Remote Desktop services → Remote Desktop Session host → licensing, double-click Use specified Remote Desktop license server on the right, as shown in 1-6.

(2) in the use the specified Remote Desktop License Server dialog box, select Enabled, and in the license server to use text box, enter the computer name or IP address of the RD licensing server, as shown in 172.16.17.1,1-7. Then click the Next Setting button.

(3) Open the "Hide Notifications for RD licensing issues that affect RD Session Host Servers" dialog box, check "Enabled", as shown in 1-8. Then click the Next Setting button.

(4) In the Set Remote Desktop Licensing Mode dialog box, select Enabled, and in the Specify the licensing mode for the RD Session Host Server drop-down list, select by user, as shown in 1-9. Then click the OK button to complete the setup.

Close the local Group Policy Editor, open a command Prompt window, execute gpupdate/force, and refresh the local policy.

Open the RD Licensing Troubleshooter again, and you can see that the current RD Session host has been specified and connected to the RD Licensing service, as shown in 1-10.

1.2 Modify the default Group Policy to specify the RD licensing service

If you have more than one RD Session host on your network, administrators can also specify the RD Licensing service for the Terminal server by modifying the system's default Group Policy so that it does not need to be configured on each RD Session host one by one. The main steps are as follows.

(1) In the Active Directory server, open Group Policy Management, right-click Default Domain Policy, and select Edit 1-2-1 as shown.

(2) in the computer configuration → Administrative Templates →windows component, double-click Remote Desktop Services, as shown in 1-2-2.

(3) in Remote Desktop services → Remote Desktop Session host → licensing, double-click Use specified Remote Desktop license server on the right, as shown in 1-2-3.

(6) in the set up the Remote Desktop Licensing Mode dialog box, select Enabled, and in the Specify the licensing mode for the RD Session Host Server drop-down list, select by user, as shown in 1-2-6. Then click the OK button to complete the setup.

(7) Close the Group Policy Editor, open a command Prompt window, execute gpupdate/force, refresh the domain policy, 1-2-7, as shown.

(8) The default Group Policy is displayed, and you can see the settings, shown in 1-2-8.

(9) Open RD Licensing Manager to see the licenses that have been installed and assigned, as shown in 1-2-9.

(10) When an RD Session host is assigned a license, you can view it in the "issued" list, as shown in 1-2-10.

Thereafter, all the fields that are added to the RD the session host will automatically specify RD Authorization server.
