SQL SERVER nvarchar conversion deciaml failed (nvarchar to decimal)

Msg 8115, Level 16, State 6, line 1th
An arithmetic overflow error occurred while converting nvarchar to data type numeric.

Nvarchar is with a long decimal, directly converted to decimal failed

Solution:

Convert to float and convert to decimal or int (minus decimal digits)

Cast (CAST (Trans_charge as FLOAT) as INT)

Why float?

• No idea of precision or scale across all rows:float is the lesser evil perhaps
• Empty string would cast to zero for float, fails on decimal
• Float accepts stuff like 5E-02, fails on decimal
