SQL Server version patch system and upgrade

Let's start by understanding several definitions:

RTM: Represents the release to manufacturing, which is the default version of the original release version of the product when downloaded from the CD or MSDN. However, there are also versions of the SP that are integrated when you download the SQL Server version.

Hotfix: A problem that needs to be fixed, there are many bugs or vulnerabilities in SQL Server each year, and the D fix is defined as Hotfix.

Cumulative Update (CU): Cumulative update package made up of Hotfix. CU is released every 8 weeks, so there will be CU1, CU2 ... And so on, each of the latest CU versions contains the hotfix in the previous CU. The installation of CU is based on the original version (RTM) or SP.

Service Package (SP): SPS are the most integrated Hotfix packages, and these Hotfix have been officially tested. The SP is the largest patch file for the SQL Server product version, published every December-1 August.

Each of the latest CU contains an issue fix for the previous CU integration, and each SP also contains bug fixes that were previously included with the SP. Now look at a picture and know how SQL Server fixes the patch!

General distribution Release (GDR): A GDR fix contains issues that is security-related and/or has a wide Impact,and are r Eleased without any and critical updates that has been released for the specific branch. These is typically used by customers who need the fixes they contain,but don ' t has the resources to test all of the othe R fixes that come with cumulative Updates.

Quick-fix Engineering (QFE): This was a potentially less-tested Fix (also sometimes called a hotfix) that gets distributed to A small number of customers for a very specific issue,through a COD or CU. (In the Windows World,this was called an Ldr-limi Ted Distribution release-but that nomenclature have not caught on in the SQL Server team.)

At my previous Job,we received a private QFE for a SQL Server 2005 issue with temporary tables for destruction. That's fix eventually made it into Service Pach (though I can ' t recall if it is an officially documented issue).

Take SQL Server 2014 as an example

(For ease of understanding: RTM is equivalent to full backup, SP equals differential backup, CU equals smaller differential backup, GDR is equivalent to backing up a table)

From the diagram, if SQL Server 2014 has just been released and we are very quick to use, then we often encounter a variety of possible problems, so it is best to wait a year or two to use, of course, some problems can be ignored. However, it is best to make the latest patches.

GDR (general distribution Release) is not the same as CU, each of the latest CU contains a cumulative update since RTM/SP, and the GDR contains only serious updates.

I used to fix these problems with the SP, but even after installing the latest SP, I later confirmed some problems. For example, after SQL Server SP2, which is now (as of 2017-04-21), more than 20 hotfix (cumulative Update 5 for SQL server SP2) have been identified. Perhaps soon, SQL Server 2014 will merge SP2 and the latest CU hotfix into SP3.

Review the current version to determine which patches need to be downloaded:

Download the file for Sqlserver2014sp2-kb3171021-x64-chs.exe, two-machine installation.

Installation is complete! To view the version again:

Now it's SP2. The installation is complete and the production environment is best to restart the server.

Next you should install cumulative Update 5, here for testing, now install SQL Server Service Pack 2 GDR.

GDR download file: Sqlserver2014-kb3194714-x64.exe, dual-machine installation, operation and installation of SP like!

Now then install cumulative Update 5, this CU5 is based on SP2, so SP2 is installed first.

CU5 download file for Sqlserver2014-kb4013098-x64.exe, dual-machine installation, operation and installation of SP like!

View Windows Update, you can see the SP2, CU5, GDR three updates.

For rollback, you can press the reverse order right-click Uninstall! You must restart the server after uninstalling!

If the following prompt pops up when uninstalling cumulative Update 5, report SharePoint is relevant, and you can find the corresponding file in the installation package of SQL Server 2014 as prompted.
