Currently, popular Proxy Server software include Microsoft Proxy Server, WinGate and Sygate, however, these agent software have various disadvantages. Microsoft Proxy Server requires a combination of Windows NT/2000 and IIS, to make full use of the transparency and seamless connection of WinSock Proxy, you also need to install the Microsoft Proxy Client program, which also limits the platform used by the Client. The WinGate function is quite complete, however, when the client uses software such as QQ and Outlook Express, the settings for the server and client are quite complex, and Wingate cannot use the second-level proxy. the Sygate settings are very simple, there are no complex settings for using the client program, but its service is in the form of shared bandwidth and there is no cache function, which greatly reduces the access speed. 　　Simple Installation. The installation of WinRoute is very simple. Basically, you only need to run "Next", but pay attention to the following two points during installation:

1. When selecting the installation directory, the installation directory should be placed on a hard disk or partition with sufficient space, because it should be considered to provide sufficient space for the cache.

2. if the operating system is NT, You need to perform the following operations: click Control Panel, network properties, and protocol, and then press the Add button to add "WinRoute Kernel Drive" to inform NT of the directory after WinRoute is installed. For machines with dual NICs, WinRoute requires two IP addresses, one internal IP address and one external IP address. Make sure that the internal IP address is not the same as other IP addresses in the LAN. 1. First, change the default listening port of the proxy server, because there are a lot of proxy hunters on the Internet. If you do not change this port, it is easy to leave a security risk.

2. Cache Enabled (proxy server Cache function) must be Enabled. Otherwise, the browsing speed slows down.

3. continue Aborted and Keep Aborted must Keep the missing settings, that is, Continue Aborted. This setting can enable the server to still read the site content to the cache when the user interrupts access to a page, when you roll back to this page, you can maintain a fast display speed.

4. the Time-To-Live item is used To set the retention days of cached content. It is suitable for 20 days. If the Time is too short, the server needs To read frequently accessed pages into the cache frequently, if the time is too long, the cache becomes bloated, and it takes a long time for the server to retrieve the webpage, which is not conducive to improving the client access speed.

5. some websites may have high access frequency due to a certain requirement, such as chat websites or news websites. If we want to extend the retention time of these websites in the cache, you need to use the "TTL Advanced" option to set the number of days that an object can be stored in the cache based on the address of the object to be accessed. In this case, you can use the wildcard "*".

6. if you use a second-level Proxy, you must use the Parent Proxy item. For a second-level Proxy, you must specify the IP address and port number of the second-level Proxy server, after the video preparation is completed, all proxy requests will be forwarded to the second-level proxy server for processing.

　　Security Settings. Security issues cannot be ignored for WinRoute because the Proxy Server of WinRoute can be used by anyone by default. If you do not set the permissions, security issues will occur. It would be hard to predict the consequences if any of them are targeted. Therefore, it is necessary to set the WinRoute access permission. The permission settings are as follows.

1. Set Access permissions for different user accounts or groups. Click the "Access" tab in figure (3). The page shown in figure (4) is displayed. Enter the list of Access control permissions here. For example, if the User group is allowed to access the specified site www.microsoft.com, you can click "Insert" to add the [www.microsoft.com site and select the "User" group in the Avail list, click "Add" To Add the User group To the Access To list. With this setting, non-User group members cannot Access the specified site. The wildcard can be used for the URL address. If you do not want the Proxy Server to work, you do not have any account and use the wildcard "*" to restrict access to any site.

2. You can set the places that the local client can access. Select Settings/Advanced/Security from the menu to set Security rules. Each of your network adapters can have a set of security rules. Select the NIC for which you want to Add rules, and click "Add". Here, the source and target addresses can be hosts, address segments, or fixed addresses. These addresses are IP-based, after setting the source and target addresses, set the rules, Permit or Deny. For the sake of insurance, you can set multiple rules. WinRoute generally checks the security rule table in sequence. If Permit is first encountered, the rule is allowed. If Deny is first encountered, the rule is rejected; if there is no rule for this address, allow.

　　Client settings. Set the gateway of the client machine to the internal IP address of WinRoute and restart the computer to connect to the Internet through the proxy server. Of course, this connection is restricted by the security rules set by WinRoute. It should be noted that, although the IE browser can browse without any settings, the contents browsed by the client will not be recorded in the Cache of the server. To improve the browsing speed, set IE as follows. Click "tools/options/connection/LAN Settings" to select the "use proxy server" check box and enter the server address and port number. Note that the port number must be consistent with the server port number. Because the server uses automatic address resolution, any client-side TCP/IP-based program can be used.
