In the past few weeks, we have discussed major updates to the operating system of Ubuntu's first LTS version over the past two years. Today, we will list the major application updates in the Ubuntu app store since the previous LTS version. In addition to a large number of desktop application updates (discussed in the next section), major programs and tool updates have been well updated by a large number of other programs and tools over the past two years. In the past few weeks, we have discussed major updates to the operating system of Ubuntu's first LTS version over the past two years. Today, we will list the major application updates in the Ubuntu app store since the previous LTS version.

Major programs and tools updated

In addition to a large number of desktop application updates (discussed in the next section), many other programs and tools have been updated very well over the past two years. Part of this discussion is as follows:

  • Xen 4.4This is a major update for Ubuntu's built-in Xen. The most significant change is that it no longer supports 32-bit CPUs (although it continues to support 32-bit operating systems ). This shouldn't be a big problem, because most CPUs have been 64-bit over the past six years. However, this means that those who are still using Ubuntu on old servers or laptops Need To Know That Xen will no longer support their CPU.

  • Qe 2.0Next we will introduce QEMU later, because QEMU has made some adjustments to adapt to Xen. The major impact is that the VM created in KVM cannot be migrated from Ubuntu 12.04 to this version, and the snapshot cannot be recovered. In addition, binary virtualization for arm64 is added.

  • MySQLAlthough MySQL 5.5 is installed by default, you can also install Percona, MariaDB, or MySQL 5.6 from the standard library. Surprisingly, unlike other mainstream releases, Ubuntu does not change the database to MariaDB and continues to install MySQL by default. I guess it is a good relationship with Oracle.

  • Apache 2.4 and PHP 5.5Unexpectedly, Apache was upgraded to version 2.4. After all, Version 2.2 has been used stably for too long. However, I am very happy to see that the mainstream releases can be updated with the new version. PHP can be upgraded to PHP 12.04 as early as 5.5 LTS, but PHP 5.5 has been installed by default in the new version. Note: If you are using some of the boss's CMS platforms (such as DRUPAL), you may have to make some adjustments during the upgrade process. For details, refer to the documentation.

Software Center: desktop application upgrade

In short, the main software in the Software Center has many major updates (after all, it has been two years since the previous version ). The most obvious software updates are as follows:

  • Google Chrome 33
  • Firefox 28
  • Nautilus 3.10
  • The Gimp-2.8
  • KDE 4.13 (I think it is the best desktop environment)

Although not mentioned above, the Office kit has been pre-installed with LibreOffice 4.2.3.3. It looks great and you don't believe it yourself:

Summary

In short, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS successfully transitioned from 12.04. Unless you are lucky enough to use the latest NVidia graphics card (Linux Dedicated drivers using the 780GTX or Titan chip are not integrated into the system ).

In the following articles, I will gain an in-depth understanding of more technical details about the display and graphics card (better high-resolution display), while at the same time on the Mir (Xwindows Desktop Replacement software) perform an early preview test (of course in the virtual machine environment ). If you want to know more, leave a message in the comment bar. We will see you next week!
