Saidi Net News in September 21, after years of struggle with Microsoft, Sun now target Linux vendors. The company has said it will enter the Solaris-based low-end server market. Sun will officially announce the plan to Wall Street users on Tuesday 21.

Sun said, tests showed that server systems based on the Sun Solaris System and AMD Opteron processor are a better server platform than the same configuration products based on the Red Hat Linux system. Not only is the price low, but its stability is also more reliable.

Anil Gadre, Sun's chief marketing officer, said: "An increasing number of users are moving towards the low-end market, which is a very promising market. Frankly speaking, we have not joined this market before ."

In the booming global IT industry, Sun has made huge profits by selling its own HPC chip and the high-end server products of the Solaris system. However, as more and more users realize that low-end server products composed of low-end chips and low-end Linux systems can also meet their needs, Sun has lost a large number of customers in the past year.

According to industry analysts, it is not clear that entering the low-end market can change the current situation of Sun.

Gordon Haff, analyst at Illuminata, said: "There is no way to determine whether Sun can win consumers in the low-end market ."

In the just-over-the-year fiscal year, Sun's sales reached $11.19 billion, with a loss of $0.388 billion. However, this includes $1.95 billion for Microsoft settlement. In FY 2003, Sun's sales amounted to $11.43 billion, with a loss of $3.43 billion.

Sun also revealed that its new version of Solaris will be available later this year. By then, without changing any code, the new version of the software will allow users to run all the Linux software programs. In addition, Linux plans to open the source code of the Solaris system.
