Sun: won't close any source code MySQL always open source last week MySQL Conference and Expo Conference SUN said to close some of the Mysql source code, this action immediately aroused anger in the open source community. At present, SUN's former CEO Marten Mickos clarified that MySQL will always be open source software.

The controversy centered on reports that SUN plans to disable the source code of the backup feature in MySQL 6.0. only paid enterprise users can modify this part of the code.

Mickos clarified that SUN will not reduce or disable any community version of MySQL. users of Community Edition or Enterprise Edition can have core backup functions and backup APIs. however, SUN plans to develop advanced add-on functions, such as encryption and compression, for paying enterprise users.

Mickos believes that this is the source of the previous misunderstanding. SUN will not close the source code of any MySQL, and MySQL will continue to be protected by GPL based software release licenses. any user may use APIs to create or modify their own add-ons.
