The configuration of network management switch has always been fascinated by many people, not only for the general users, but also for many professional users, but also as an important and basic indicator of the level of network management.

this is mainly in two reasons, one is the vast majority of enterprises configured switches are desktop non-network management switch, do not need any configuration, is purely "fool" type, and the same as the hub, connected to the power, plug the network cable can be normal work;

on the other hand most of the small business executives are not very reassuring to their own network manager, so even if the switch is the network management type, also do not let their network management personnel to configure, but to ask the manufacturer engineer or other professionals to configure, so these, Small Business network administrators are also very difficult to have the opportunity to really do their own to configure a network-management switch.

switch Detailed configuration process is more complex, and the specific configuration method will be different brands, different series of network management switches, this article teaches you only general configuration methods, with these common configuration methods, we can extrapolate, mastery. 3lian.com

typically network-managed switches can be configured in two ways: local configuration and Remote networking configuration, but note that the latter configuration is only possible after the previous configuration succeeds, as described below.

Local Configuration The first thing we have to encounter is its physical connection, and then we need to face the software configuration, in the software configuration we mainly to the most common Cisco's "Catalyst 1900" network management switch as an example to tell. Because the local configuration of the network management switch is related to the hard, the software connection, so below we divide these two steps to explain the basic configuration of the connection process.

physical connection because of the portable performance of the portable computer, the configuration switch is usually done with a notebook computer, but in the absence of a notebook, of course, you can also use the desktop, but it is difficult to move. The local configuration of the switch is communicated through a direct connection of the computer to the Console port of the switch, its connection diagram.

Network-managed switches typically have a "Console" port (as described in the previous hub, as well as switches) that are designed to be configured and managed for the switch. Connecting and configuring the switch through the console port is the step that must be passed to configure and manage the switch.

Although there are several other ways to configure and manage switches, such as Web mode, Telnet, and so on, these methods must be based on a basic configuration through the console port. Because other methods often require IP addresses, domain names, or device names to be implemented, and the newly purchased switches are clearly not built with these parameters, connecting and configuring the switch via the console port is the most common and basic management and configuration that network administrators must master.

different types of switch console ports are located on the front panel (such as Catalyst 3200 and Catalyst 4006), while others are located on the back panel (such as Catalyst 1900 and Catalyst 2900XL). Typically, the modular switches are mostly in the front panel, while the fixed configuration switches are mostly in the back panel. However, there is no need to worry that the console port cannot be found, and there will be an identity similar to "CONSOLE" on the top or side of the port.

except for the location, the console port has different types, and the vast majority (such as Catalyst 1900 and Catalyst 4006) all use RJ-45 ports (as shown in Figure 2), but there are also a few DB-9 serial ports (such as catalyst 3200) or DB-25 serial port (such as Catalyst 2900).

whether the switch uses a DB-9 or DB-25 serial interface or a RJ-45 interface, it needs to be connected to a serial port configured with a computer (usually called a terminal) through a dedicated console line. Unlike the console ports of the switch, the console line is divided into two types: one is a serial line, that is, both ends are serial interfaces (both ends are female).

The
ends can be plugged into the computer's serial port and the console port of the switch respectively, and the other is a flat line with a RJ-45 connector (rj-45-to-rj-45) at both ends. Because flat line both ends are the RJ-45 interface, cannot connect directly with the computer serial port.

Therefore, you must also use an rj-45-to-db-9 (or rj-45-to-db-25) adapter, as shown in Figure 3. Typically, such a console line and corresponding DB-9 or DB-25 adapters are randomly presented in the box of a network-management switch.

Physical connection Okay, we are going to turn on the computer and switch power to the software configuration, the following we have a Cisco network management switch "Catalyst 1900" to describe this configuration process. We also need to enter the system before we formally enter the configuration, as follows:

Step 1th: Open a computer that is connected to a switch and run one of the operating systems, such as Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows 2000, on your computer.

Step 2nd: Check to see if the HyperTerminal (Hyper Terminal) component is installed. If the component is not found in accessories, you can add the Windows component through Add/Remove Programs (Add/remove program).

OK, "HyperTerminal" after installation, we can communicate with the network management switch (of course to connect well, and turn on the switch power supply), the following steps are formally configured. Before using HyperTerminal to establish communication with the switch, you must make the necessary settings for HyperTerminal.
