Ethernet is currently the world's most widely used LAN technology. The reason for its success is that, over the past 20 years, its standards have been constantly improving with the needs of the network. As an attractive solution for IP networks, Ethernet has the following key features: scalability, flexible deployment distances, support for various network applications ranging from short-range LANs (approximately 100m) to long distance metropolitan areas (40km or more), low cost, flexibility and interoperability, ease of use and management. These factors make Ethernet the implementation technology of 4 kinds of key networks.

One, the four applications of Ethernet

1. Gigabit Ethernet in the Enterprise

Complex applications and more powerful PCs continue to drive network traffic to new highs and cause critical connection bandwidth to be low. To improve performance, the server is equipped with a Gigabit Ethernet. In the desktop arena, declining prices are also speeding up the adoption of Gigabit Ethernet, especially where the work environment tends to be mutually agreed, often requiring a large number of files to be shared, as well as centralized applications and multitasking. The current trend is that 10/100/1000mbit/s Ethernet is increasingly replacing 10/100MBIT/S Ethernet (This trend is exacerbated when 10/100mbit/s adaptive Ethernet connection costs approach conventional Ethernet). Cahners In-sta predicted that by the middle of 2002, more than 50% of the world's network card sales will come from the Gigabit Ethernet products. (Computer science)

2. Wireless network

Wireless Ethernet connection is the logical extension of Ethernet, which helps to achieve a wide range of "virtual" enterprises. Previously, wireless LAN was only concerned by the IT industry itself. But in recent years, the benefits of wireless networks have been widely recognized, in a larger range is recognized as the ideal solution for mobile users, as the vast number of enterprise users of the "real-time infrastructure." Analysts believe that with the rapid development of the market, it will enter the "heyday of the period."

There are several reasons for the development of wireless networks from vertical markets to mainstream applications: (1) standards and improved performance the IEEE 802.11 standard has become a major wireless LAN standard since its release in 1999. The 802.11B high speed standard has been adopted by most of the wireless equipment manufacturers, and its data rate is up to 11mbit/s. Most of the early-deployed wireless LANs opted for this technology, with the advent of the IEEE 802.11A standard, which provides faster data rates, longer coverage distances, and higher security. (2) mobile device expansion. A variety of new wireless devices can be connected to the corporate and wide area networks, including laptops and desktops with wireless cards, PDAs and PDAs with built-in wireless devices, Internet access applications and VoIP phones, which also extend the range of wireless Ethernet solutions.

3. Networked Storage

Rapid growth in e-mail and E-commerce has led to a dramatic increase in data traffic in IP networks, which has led to a move away from the traditional Das (direct-attached storage) model to a network infrastructure, known as SAN (storage Area Network) and NAS (networked-attached storage). According to IDC, SAN and NAS are expected to grow rapidly over the next few years and occupy a 26% share of the global storage System market.

A new technology based on Ethernet and called iSCSI, the Internet scsi (small computer system interface) or SCSI over IP, delivers high-speed, low-cost, Remote Storage solutions for Web sites, service providers, businesses, and other organizations. iSCSI standards make it possible to build ip-based sans, where traditional SCSI commands and data transfers are performed on top of the TCP/IP layer, while iSCSI block traffic can be transmitted over Ethernet protocols. Gigabit iSCSI due to the combination of SCS1. All the currently widely used technologies, such as Ethernet and TCP/IP, can minimize interoperability issues.

4. Ethernet in metropolitan area network

The porting of Gigabit Ethernet to the desktop has fuelled the demand for 10 Gigabit Ethernet for servers and enterprise arteries. 10 Gigabit Ethernet is the best choice for a metropolitan area network with a number of key features of high speed network requirements, such as lower cost, flexibility, and interoperability with existing Ethernet. The implementation of Ethernet in the metropolitan area Network can combine the speed and cost advantages of Ethernet with the transmission distance and reliability of optical network, with the ability of cost advantage, interoperability and easy porting to higher performance level, it is natural that 10 Gigabit Ethernet be integrated into metropolitan area network.

Second, the development trend of large network technology

As one of the oldest network technologies, the Great network technology will continue to develop. Excellent price/performance, flexibility, and interoperability are advantages, but as with most technology solutions, cost is an important factor in determining its development speed. Currently the leading supplier of Ethernet components, such as Intel Corporation, is already working on new products and building blocks that offer excellent performance and price advantages. The intervention of these powerful IT industry giants helps to promote the rapid development of Ethernet technology, on the other hand, it can effectively reduce the cost of products by virtue of its economic power and scale effect, thereby benefiting the end users.
