The first revision of volume 3rd makes the most comprehensive study of the classical computer sorting and searching techniques. It expands the processing of data structures in volume 1th to take into account both the size database and the internal and external memory, and selects a well-tested computer method and makes quantitative analysis of its efficiency. The salient feature of volume 3rd is the revision of the "Optimal ordering" section and the discussion of the permutation theory and the general hashing method.

Donald.e.knuth (Donald. E. Knut, the Chinese name Gartner, is a pioneer in algorithmic and procedural design technology, and is the inventor of the computer typesetting system Tex and Metafont, which he world famous because of these achievements and a large number of creative and far-reaching writings (19 books and 160 theses). As Emeritus professor of computer programming at Stanford University, he is currently concentrating on completing his epic seven-volume set of computer science. This great project began in 1962 when he was a graduate student at the California Institute of Technology. Professor Knuth has received many awards and honors, including the American Computer Association Turing Award (ACM Turing Award), the Scientific Gold Award by former President Jimmy Carter (Medal of Science), the American Mathematical Society Steele Award (AMS Steele Prize), And the highly acclaimed Kyoto Award (Kyoto Prize), which was awarded in November 1996 for the invention of advanced technology. Professor Knuth now lives in Stanford campus with his wife, Jill.
