PPTP

L2tp

The 2nd-Tier Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) is a PPTP follow-on version developed by the IETF based on L2F (Cisco's 2-tier forwarding protocol), an industrial standard Internet Tunneling protocol.

The main differences between the two are mainly as follows:

1.PPTP can only establish a single tunnel between the two endpoints, L2TP supports multiple tunnels between the two ends, which creates different service quality for different users.

2.L2TP can provide tunneling authentication mechanisms, while PPTP does not provide such a mechanism, but when L2TP or PPTP is used in conjunction with IPSec, tunneling validation can be provided by IPSec and no tunneling validation mechanism is required on layer 2nd protocols.

3.PPTP requires the Internet to be an IP network, and L2TP only requires that the tunnel media provide point-to-point connection to the packet, L2TP can be used on IP (using UDP), fr,atm,x.25 network.

4.L2TP can provide Baotou compression. When the header is compressed, the system overhead (overhead) occupies 4 bytes, while the PPTP protocol consumes 6 bytes.
