Ubuntu Edge is an ideal solution for Canonical to integrate mobile and desktop. Edge's high-price fundraising eventually ended in failure, but Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth believes that the iPhone 5s "desktop processor" is a continuation of this dream.
Since its launch, Apple has always advertised that the 64-bit ARM-based A7 is a desktop processor. Ubuntu Edge has always wanted to replace the existing "Mobile + desktop" mode with "one mobile phone + one OS. The two companies agree on this point.
Next steps for Ubuntu on mobile phones
Ubuntu Touch 1.0 for mobile phones will be launched next week (10.17). We have seen its Developer Preview earlier this year.
Version 1.0 supports basic functions of mobile phones: calls, text messages, Web browsing, and data exchange between apps. However, it is still in its infancy.
On the other hand, no Ubuntu Touch OS device has been released. Canonical plans to launch two Ubuntu-based mid-range servers and two high-end servers.
Shuttleworth said that at present some operators have cooperation intentions, and hardware manufacturers have begun to develop the combined development of Ubuntu and hardware. Ubuntu is expected to be available in the first half of 2014.
One OS for all devices
The ultimate vision of Canonical is divided into two lines: one cell phone replaces mobile and desktop devices (connected to one monitor); and The Code fusion of desktop, mobile phone, tablet and server.
To achieve this vision, Canonical adopted the new Display Service Stack Mir. Display on Ubuntu, and Shuttleworth called it the key to fast and clear image processing for devices.
However, this change has encountered stability issues on the current desktop version of Ubuntu. Shuttleworth is expected to implement all OS consolidation by next April.
