On the evening of July 22, August 22, Beijing time, Canonical, a developer of Ubuntu Linux, launched a crowdfunding campaign for Ubuntu Edge smartphones on the crowdfunding website Indiegogo last month to raise $32 million. This week, the final funding result was nearly $20 million from this target, and the project was terminated.

From October 21 to September 21, more than 27 thousand supporters promised to provide Canonical with $12.8 million in funding over 30 days. Among them, Bloomberg promised to invest $80 thousand. This is the only large enterprise that promises to invest in it. In the first 24 hours of the crowdfunding campaign, the amount of funds raised reached $3.4 million. However, investor enthusiasm quickly degrades. Canonical has also revised the funding plan multiple times.

According to the initial plan, the first 5000 investors will be able to buy a Ubuntu Edge mobile phone at a price of $600, and then all will be able to buy it at a price of $830. However, Canonical subsequently modified the plan to cut the price to $695. Even so, as of August 7, the funding for this crowdfunding campaign was only $8.3 million.

Industry insiders believe that the Canonical crowdfunding campaign has been very successful, and the total amount has exceeded $12 million. Previously, the smart watch Project Pebble raised $10.2 million through the crowdfunding website Kickstarter, the highest record in history. However, the initial funding target for this project is only $0.1 million. If a lower funding target is set, Canonical has now completed funding. However, Canonical points out that the cost of developing a high-end smartphone is much higher than that of smart phone accessories such as Pebble.

In an interview with The Guardian, Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworh confirms that the concept of Ubuntu Edge high-end mobile phones will be terminated. However, carriers and Mobile phone manufacturers are interested in using the Ubuntu Mobile system to develop low-end smartphones.
