1. Overview

After the installation of the virtual machine, the default installation of such as the two virtual network card--vmnet1 and VMnet8, where VMnet1 is the host network card, for the host network connection, VMNET8 is a NAT network card for the NAT connection, and their IP address is randomly generated.

VMware offers three modes of operation, namely bridged (bridging mode), NAT (network address translation mode), and Host-only (host-only mode), such as. To properly apply them in network management and maintenance, you should first look at these three modes of work.

2, bridged (bridge mode)

In this mode, using the VMnet0 Virtual Switch, the virtual operating system is like a separate host in the LAN, and as with the host computer, it can access any machine in the network. In bridge mode, you can manually configure its TCP/IP configuration information (IPs, subnet masks, and so on, and also in the same network segment as the host machine) to enable access to the Internet through a LAN gateway or router, and to set the IP address and DNS to "get automatically." If you want to use VMware to create a new server within the LAN, to provide Web or network services for LAN users, you should choose bridging mode.

In bridging mode, the VMnet0 Virtual switch is used, and the virtual machine has a separate IP address, just like a standalone computer on the network and a host.

    • A1, A2, A, b four operating systems can access each other
    • A1, A2 IP is "extranet" IP, can be set manually, can also be automatically obtained

3. NAT (network address translation mode)

Using NAT mode, the virtual machine is allowed to access the public network through the network of the host machine with the help of NAT (network address translation) function. In other words, the use of NAT mode enables access to the Internet in virtual systems. The TCP/IP configuration information for a virtual machine in NAT mode is provided by the DHCP server for the VMNET8 virtual network, so IP and DNS are generally set to "auto Fetch", so the virtual system cannot communicate with other real hosts on the local area network. The biggest advantage of using NAT mode is that virtual system access to the Internet is very simple, you do not need to do any other configuration, only the host machine can access the Internet. If you want to use VMware to install a new virtual system, you can directly access the Internet without any manual configuration in the virtual system, it is recommended that you use NAT mode.

The VMNET8 Virtual switch is used in NAT mode, where the virtual machine can be accessed by the host "one-way access" to other hosts on the network, and other hosts cannot access the virtual machine. In NAT mode:

    • A1, A2 can access B
    • b No access to A1, A2
    • A1, A2, a mutual access
    • A1, A2 IP for LAN IP, can be configured manually, can also be automatically obtained

4, Host-only (host mode)

In host-only mode, virtual machines can only exchange visits with virtual machines and hosts, but virtual machines and external networks are isolated, that is, not on the Internet. In host-only mode, the TCP/IP configuration information (such as IP address, gateway address, DNS server, etc.) of the virtual system is dynamically allocated by the DHCP server of the VMNET1 virtual network. Using the Host-only method:

    • A, A1, A2 can exchange visits
    • A1, A2 cannot access B
    • b cannot access A1, A2
    • A1, A2 for LAN IP, can be configured manually, can also be set to Automatic acquisition mode

In three modes, the IP of the virtual machine can be set to automatic acquisition, once automatically obtained will not change (unless manually configured), that is, after the next restart of the IP is the same as last.

5. Replicate Physical network connection state option explained

When a single-machine multi-card or notebook and mobile device use a virtual machine, when switching between wired and wireless networks, the replicate physical network connection state is checked, and the IP address of the VM network card is automatically updated and does not need to be reset.
