Rewind and BACKSPACE of Fortran language

In the early Fortran specification and compilers, backspace and rewind were indeed related to sequential storage devices such as tape drives. Later, it becomes a device-independent statement. However, it may be related to file mode.

Rewind is still very common now. If your program needs to read the same text format data file two times, when you have finished reading the first time, use rewind to return to the file header.

BACKSPACE is used to rollback a record. The following is usually appended with the file number, where the record can be understood as a carriage return symbol.
