IBM first announced its cooperation with Novell in last August to provide integrated open collaboration client products for Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop. After joining Red Hat and Ubuntu, IBM joined the world's top three Linux version suppliers and declared war on Microsoft.

The IBM open collaboration client solution covers the e-mail and collaboration software IBM Lotus Notes, the integrated communication and collaboration platform IBM Lotus Sametime, the office software package IBM Lotus Symphony, the Portal platform IBM WebSphere Portal, enterprise social software IBM Lotus Connections, team collaboration and file management software IBM Lotus Quickr, Eclipse-based application development and deployment software IBM Lotus Expeditor, etc.

IBM plans to integrate these software to help enterprise employees improve collaboration capabilities to improve productivity and reduce costs, and to provide an alternative to Microsoft Desktop program.

Ubuntu is a Linux operating system that has rapidly started. It is updated every six months on average. It focuses on developing more friendly user interfaces to attract the favor of general users. IBM is expected to release Lotus Notes 8.5 with full support for Ubuntu in the second quarter of this year. Users can download Lotus Symphony.

Mark Murphy, vice president of Canonical strategy alliance, who sponsored Ubuntu, said that with IBM support, Ubuntu users now have outstanding Lotus Notes and enterprises can choose Lotus Domino. Technically, it is quite attractive for Ubuntu users to build and provide rich client applications on the Eclipse platform.

In cooperation with RedHat, both parties intend to combine their respective sales channels, integrates Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Platform, Enterprise Linux Desktop, IBM Lotus Notes client with Lotus Symphony, IBM Lotus Domino server, and other products to jointly develop the SME market. Red Hat provides quick deployment and other value-added services, IBM provides desktop or application transfer software.

Novell, the first to cooperate with IBM, said that there are now more than 10 value-added dealers providing the transfer and integration of open and collaborative client solutions globally, said Roger Levy, general manager of Novell Open Platform solutions, the rapid support of partners clearly points out the value of this market. Jeff Smith, vice president of IBM open source, said that this shows that the open computing environment and the importance of choice are growing for customers and partners.
