Did you find the battery dead during an important meeting or a long flight? Even with new technology, a single rechargeable laptop or tablet can only last that long. This technique is designed to fully utilize the power supply.
Here are some ways to help you extend your computer's battery life:
Select an energy-efficient power plan. Windows 8 has two such default plans: Balance and energy saving. To learn more about power plans and how to change the power plan, go to the Power Plan: frequently asked questions.
Attention
This method does not apply to Windows RT or computers that are connected to standby because the only default plan for this computer is "balanced," but you can save more power by customizing. To learn how to do this, go to the Power Plan: frequently asked questions.
Your computer manufacturer may offer other plans.
Reduce the brightness of the display. In all parts of a computer, the monitor uses the most power.
To change the brightness of a display
Swipe from the right edge of the screen to the middle, and click Set. (If you use the mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, and then move the pointer down, and then click Settings.)

Some computers have buttons or keys that are designed to change the brightness of the display. To find out if your computer has this feature, check the information that came with your computer or visit the manufacturer's website.
Shorten the time before Windows dims and turns off the monitor. When you're not using a laptop or a tablet computer (even if it's a short time), you can save power by letting Windows darken and turn off the display after a period of inactivity.
To choose Windows to darken and turn off display time
Turn on power options by tapping from the right edge of the screen to the middle click "Search" (if you use the mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, then move the pointer down, click Search), enter the control Panel in the Search box, and click or click Apply and Control Panel in turn. In the Search box in Control Panel, enter the power supply, and then press ENTER.
On the left side of the Select or customize Power Plan page, click or click Choose Time to turn off the display.
On the Change Scheduled Settings page, select the display settings that you want to use when your laptop or tablet computer is running and powering on with the battery on this power plan.
Click or click Save Changes.
Attention
Adjust settings only for power plans that are currently in use. To change the settings for another power plan, on the Select or customize the Power Plan page, click or click Change Schedule settings next to the plan you want to change.
Turn off or remove devices that are not in use. Many USB devices consume power as long as they are connected, so it is recommended that you unplug them when you are not using them. If you are using a USB mouse, replacing the mouse with a touchpad or stylus can save you energy.
Turn off the computer card and the integrated wireless device. These devices also consume power, so please turn them off when you are not using them.
