Scott: I am very excited to announce that Novell released Moonlight 1.0 today, which can be downloaded for free and supports most mainstream Linux versions (including openSUSE, SUSE Linux Enterprise, Fedora, Red Hat, and Ubuntu ). Moonlight is an open-source Silverlight implementation jointly developed by Novell and Microsoft for Linux.

My team works closely with Miguel de Icaza and his team on this project. We also released Microsoft Media Pack ), this package is a set of authorized media encoders (licensed media codecs) that can be used to play all Silverlight-compatible media (wmv, wma, mp3, etc ), it can be downloaded free of charge for Linux users running Moonlight.

Moonlight allows Linux users to browse the Silverlight content and use the Silverlight application. Recently, the Presidential Inaugural Committee used Silverlight to broadcast President Barack Obama's inauguration ceremony. More than 50 thousand of Linux users installed Moonlight and watched the event online. Volunteers from Miguel de Icaza and Moonlight have made great efforts to ensure that Linux users can watch the live broadcast of the inauguration ceremony, even though it was several weeks before the official release of Moonlight.

I am very excited by the awesome work done by Miguel and his Novell team, and we expect to see the Moonlight 2 they are working on (compatible with Silverlight 2 and supported. NET ). For details about Moonlight 1.0, refer to Miguel's blog.

Thank you.

Introduction on it168: Silverlight can only run on windows, which makes it impossible for many users to appreciate this technology. Novell promised to develop the open-source Silverlight version a long time ago. Yesterday, miguelde Icaza, vice president of Novell developer platform and founder of Mono, announced the release of the Silverlight open-source moonlight 1.0 official version and provided free downloads.
Miguel de Icaza said: "Moonlight 1.0 is fully functional. We have passed all Microsoft regression tests and supported Silverlight x86 and X86-64 architectures ."
Moonlight 1.0 operates as a Firefox Plugin and supports UNIX, Linux, and PowerPC Mac. When installed in Firefox, the blocking information bar appears, clicking the edit Options button to add the www.go-mono.com to the license site.

Moonlight 2.0 will be based on Silverlight 2.0 and is expected to be released at the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference (PDC) in December. De Icaza said Novell will display moonlight 3.0 for the first time.
