The same Ping is not the same.

The Ping tool is very convenient in checking whether the host of the other party is normal and testing the data throughput of the link. This is also one of the most commonly used commands for network troubleshooting. However, as the number of network nodes increases and the structure becomes more complex, the probability of network faults increases. When a device fails, we must first find the faulty machine before solving the problem, can the Ping operation on a large network be daunting? Recently, I tried a small software called Friendly Pinger, which is quite good. I wrote it out to share it with you.

The biggest feature of this software is that we can create our own electronic topology. In the future, whether it is daily management or fault locating, you only need to click a few clicks in the electronic topology, Which is intuitive and easy to use. Figure 1 is software

Of course, Friendly Pinger (hereinafter referred to as FP) is not only limited here, it is a network management software suitable for daily management, to achieve basic functions such as monitoring, locating, detection, and tracing, I will list them in detail as follows:

● Easily generate a graphical electronic topology and save it as an image for Printing

● Ping Tracert FTP and other commands to run directly on the Topology

● Periodically Ping the entire network to monitor network connectivity in real time

● You can set on/off alarms for key devices and notify administrators of the alarms in multiple ways.

● Automatic collection of computer hardware and software information for us to manage

● The configured device can be moved at any time, and the connection is automatically tracked.

● The topology can be nested to easily build a large network.

How about it? It's good. Let's take a look at it with the author.

1. Create a drawing-Add a device

After creating a new drawing, right-click the drawing and choose 2 from the shortcut menu.

Select "Add Device" to select the desired Device in the icon library that comes with FP. FP comes with a rich array of icons, which can be found on devices that can be seen almost at ordinary times from communication satellites, dish antennas, communication towers to NICs, Modem, and photoelectric converters.

When you can set an IP Address for a device, the dialog box shown in 3 appears. Enter the real IP Address of the device in the Address column. If the device contains multiple IP addresses, you can also enter an Additional IP address in the Additional addresses column.

TIPS: the real advantage of FP is that you can directly manage the network on the electronic topology. Therefore, you must enter the IP addresses that are actually available. Otherwise, you don't have a chance to understand what's extraordinary.

2. Create drawings-connect devices

When all devices are added, connect them. Right-click the blank area of the drawing, select "Add Line" 2, and click the two devices that are directly connected according to the actual network structure. Then, right-click to confirm the connection, the two connected devices can communicate with each other.

Iii. Advanced Settings-automatic scanning Interval

After the drawings are finished, some may ask, how can I leave some icons on my own without being highlighted in Figure 1? In fact, this is the most useful feature of FP-automatic detection of network status. The default setting of FP is to Ping all the devices in the figure every 60 seconds to determine whether the devices are available now, the dimmed icons indicate that the device is unavailable now (possibly shutdown or otherwise faulty ). In a common network, there is no need to perform such frequent scanning. We can adjust the automatic scanning interval through the "File menu → Options → Ping period" option.

Iv. Advanced Settings-define the on/off server warning

For key devices such as servers, we naturally hope that you will be able to get the first message that the server cannot work, so as to solve the problem as soon as possible to reduce losses, FP provides us with such a very practical function.

Right-click the device to which you want to set the reminder, and select "Notification> When Gone Down or When Wakes Up" to set the shutdown or boot warning. The Dialog Box 4 is displayed, you can set to notify the administrator of audio (Play Sound), email (Send email), and Show message when the server cannot be connected as needed.

TIPS: If you select Send email, click the button next to set the SMTP server information before sending the mail.

TIPS: When a server is shut down for some reason, click the pop-up message reminder window, FP will directly animation the location of the faulty host, this provides great convenience for us to locate faulty machines in large networks.

5. Advanced Settings-add operation commands

As mentioned above, FP supports direct execution of simple commands on drawings. However, we have very few built-in operation commands in version 4.2, however, FP also provides a place for us to add commands by ourselves. The author uses it to set Ping and remote shutdown commands for each computer.

Right-click the Device and select "Configure Device Type... → External Commands → Add ", a dialog box of 5 is displayed. Comment is the Comment column. You can enter the description of this command. Application is the program file column. Enter the file name of the command file, the parameter column is at the bottom. You can enter the parameters attached to this command. 5 is the Ping command I set. It's not difficult.

After setting, you can right-click the device and find the command you just set on the menu, which is very convenient.

Tip: After the command is set, only this command can act on this host. If you want to use it on other hosts, you have to perform the same operation. However, after all the settings are complete, you just need to click, you can easily complete Ping, remote shutdown, remote logon, and other operations.

6. Fault Locating-animation Tracert

We all know that the Tracert command can help us find the route Line of data packets, but this tool that has been circulating from UNIX has been a black face for many years. After Tracert is complete, we have to check which host is disconnected one by one based on the IP address. Have you ever thought of using an animation to Tracert? Yes, this is also one of the many practical functions of FP. When you right-click the target host in the drawing and initiate a Tracert request, FP starts to Tracert the target from the local device, if you can display the specific Tracert data under the window and connect the data locally with the first vro with a very striking red arrow, then continue to the second target. In this way, we can not only intuitively see the entire route Line, but also quickly locate faulty devices.

All right, even if you have finished introducing FP to the tip of the iceberg, there are still many other functions, such as automatically collecting software and hardware information and monitoring shared files. If you are interested, you can give it a try by yourself, the disadvantage is that it does not have a Chinese version. You can download the trial version of 5.0 on the official website of Pinger on this website. It adds many functions on the basis of 4.2, making it easier to use, if you are interested, you can try it again.
