Stéphane Graber, The EdUbuntu maintainer used by many schools and educational institutions, announced in its official mailing list that the originally planned Edubuntu 16.04 (Xenial Xerus) the operating system will not be released along with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

Edubuntu is an official branch version of Ubuntu. It is mainly used by schools and various educational institutions. Based on Ubuntu, it integrates a lot of teaching and education software. It has long been part of the Ubuntu ecosystem. For educational institutions, an operating system with long-term support is very important for their computer networks.

Edubuntu's two directors, sté phane Graber and Jonathan Carter, have led the project for nine and ten years, but they have moved to another project, there is not enough energy to manage this project. Therefore, after the release of Edubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) two years ago, we decided to only release it with the LTS version. However, on the eve of the release of 16.04 LTS, there was still a small gap in the Development of Edubuntu. Considering that the rush to release a version will disappoint the expected users, they decided to abandon the release of Edubuntu 16.04 LTS.

Of course, Edubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) can also be used, but its software is a little old. Currently, it has been updated to 14.04.4, and its support period will end on January 1, April 2019.

"I now announce that Edubuntu will not release version 16.04 LTS. Instead, Jonathan and I will continue to focus on Edubuntu 14.04 LTS until the end of the support period on April 9, April 2019 ", stéphane Graber announced in the mail list that "This does not mean that Edubuntu is dead, at least not now."

Is Edubuntu dying?

According to the information provided by Stéphane Graber in the email, they "will continue to invest in Edubuntu 14.04 LTS support and hope that new contributors will be involved during this period, take over the Edubuntu project and shape it as you wish."

"The two of us will be happy to assist with Edubuntu-related uploads, help new contributors get Edubuntu identities, and hold elections to set up a new Edubuntu committee, in this way, the management right of the entire project is taken from our hands." Sté phane Graber said,"If no new contributor has taken Edubuntu over until Ubuntu 17.10 is released, Jonathan and I will ask the Technical Committee to revoke Edubuntu's official branch identity, remove all software packages, seeds, and CD image building tasks from the software repository, and officially remove Edubuntu from the Ubuntu release process."

Edubuntu is currently used in thousands of schools and education institutions around the world, so the death of such a large project will have a great impact. Fortunately, we only gave up an LTS version, rather than directly announcing the end of the project.

We do not believe that the Edubuntu system will soon die, and there is no doubt that the open source community will help it continue to survive. We have a huge community. If Edubuntu needs help from the community, we will stick out our hands in any case.

"This is a meaningful experience for both of us. We hope this is not the end of Edubuntu, but the new generation of this great Ubuntu Branch ", stéphane Graber added at the end of his email.

This means they need your help. Yes, it is you. Therefore, if you really care about Edubuntu, extend your hand to help it continue.
