In normal work, I often have friends asking me: the routers and switches of our Organization were originally configured by a certain person or company, he didn't tell the password, but we couldn't find him if we wanted to make some changes. How can I change the password? Next I will talk about how to change the vro and vswitch passwords based on my years of experience.

Set vro Mode

You can set a vro in five ways:

1. Set Through the SNMP network management workstation on the Ethernet;

2. The AUX port is connected to a MODEM and is connected to a remote terminal or a computer running the terminal simulation software through a telephone line;

3. Use the TFTP server on the Ethernet;

4. Use the TELNET program on the Ethernet (You are advised to disable this method );

5. A microcomputer that connects the Console port to a terminal or runs the terminal simulation software (recommended ).

Note: The first vro setting must be performed in 5th ways. In this case, the hardware of the terminal is set to baud rate: 9600, data bit: 8, parity: None, stop bit: 1, and traffic control: none.

Vro password Modification

The procedure is as follows:

1. Use a general WIN98 computer as the terminal, and use a dedicated connector and a set of cables to connect the Console port of the router and the serial port of the computer. Call the "Super Terminal" program of WIN98. Give the new connection a name that is easy to remember. The baud rate is 9600, data bit: 8, parity: None, stop bit: 1, traffic control: none.

2. Run the show version command.

Take a Cisco 2600 router as an example:

Router> sh ver

Cisco Internetwork Operating System Software

IOS (tm) C2600 Software (C2600-IS-M), Version 12.0 (7) T, release software (fc2)

Configuration register is 0x2102

Note that in the above line, the original value of the Register is generally 0x2102 or 0x102. Write down this value.

3. Turn off the power of the router and enable it again after 30 seconds.

4. Press the Break Key within 60 seconds after the vro is started to ignore the NVRAM boot. At the "rommon 1>" prompt, type the command confreg 0x2142 or o/r0x2142 (25 series ). At the "rommon 2>" prompt, type the command rommon 2> reset to restart the router.

5. When the vro is restarted, all the questions are answered: NO or press Ctrl-C.

After you see the "Router>" prompt, type the command: enable. You can see the "Router #" prompt. Now you are in the privileged user status.

6. Enter the command config mem or copy start running to test the content in NVRAM into the memory.

Note: Do not use the command: config term.

7. Enter the command wr term or show running. Then, you can see that the configuration of the vro includes the password. If the password is not encrypted, you can record it. Otherwise, you need to change the password.

8. type the command: config term. The prompt is displayed: hostname (config )#.

9. type the command: enable secret. Change the password.

10. We recommend that you use the command: show ip interface brief to check whether the status of each port is UP. If not, set it UP.

11. type the command: config-register 0x2102. the original value of the register in this command is the same as the value recorded in step 2nd.

12. Enter Ctrl-z to exit the configuration and return to the prompt: hostname #.

13. type the command: write mem. Save the configuration file.

14. Exit the privileged user status and close the "Super Terminal" program.
