Tips for using Dreamweaver site maps

Use site Map


You can view the local folder of the Dreamweaver site as a visual map of the linked icon, which is called a site map. You can use site maps to add new files to the Dreamweaver site, or to add, modify, or delete links.




The
site map shows two levels of depth of site structure from the home page. The site map displays the page as an icon and displays the link in the order in which it appears in the source code.





must first define the site's home page to display the site map. The site's home page is the starting point for the map, and can be any page in the site. You can change the home page, the number of columns displayed, the icon label to display the file name or the page title, and whether to display hidden files and related files. (The related file is an image or other non-HTML content that the browser loads when it loads the master page.) ）





when you work in a site map, you can select pages, open pages for editing, add new pages to a site, create links between files, and change page titles.




The
site map is the ideal site structure layout tool. You can set up the entire site structure and then create a graphical image of the site map.





Note: Site maps are available only for local sites. To create a map of a remote site, copy the contents of the remote site to a folder on your local disk, and then use the Manage Sites command to define the site as a local site. Define or change the home page for a site


in the Files Panel (window > files), select a site from the pop-up menu that displays the current site, server, or drive.


Right-click (Windows) or control-click (Macintosh) to set the file for the home page and select "Set as Home".


Note: You can also set the home page in the Site Map layout option in the Site Definition dialog box.


To change your home page, repeat step 2nd. View Site Map


in the Files Panel (window > files), do one of the following:


in the collapsed Files panel, select Map view from the Site View menu.


In the expanded Files panel, click the Site Map button in the toolbar, and then select Map only (a site map that does not contain a local file structure) or maps and files (including the local file structure).


Note: If the home page is not already defined or Dreamweaver cannot find the index.html or index.htm page to use as the home page in the current site, Dreamweaver prompts you to select a home page.


Click the plus sign (+) or minus sign (-) next to the file name to show or hide the pages that are linked below the second level:


the text shown in red indicates a broken link.




Text displayed in blue and marked with the earth icon represents a file or special link (such as an e-mail message or a script link) on another site.





The
green check mark indicates which file you have taken out.





Red check mark indicates the file that someone else took out.




The
lock icon indicates a read-only (Windows) or Locked (Macintosh) file.





Modify site Map Layout


Use the Site Map layout option to customize the appearance of your site map.





Open the Site Definition dialog box by doing one of the following:


Select Sites > Manage sites, select sites, and then click Edit.





in the Files panel, select Manage sites from the menu that displays the current site, server, or drive, and then click Edit.





in the Site Definition dialog box, select Site Map layout from the category list on the left and set options:


number of columns set the number of columns to display in each row in the Site Map window.





column widths Set the width of the site map, in pixels.





icon Label Select whether the name displayed with the document icon in the site map is represented as a file name or a page title.





Displays a file marked as hidden to display an HTML file that has been marked as hidden in the site map.





displays all related files in the site hierarchy.





Click OK, and then click Finish. View different branches in a site map


You can view the details of a site-specific section by making a branch the focus of the site map. Select the page you want to view.


do one of the following:


Right-click (Windows) or control-click (Macintosh) in the site map and select View as root.





in the Default Files panel (window > files), click the Options menu in the upper-right corner and choose View > Site map options > as root view.




The
site map is redrawn in the window just as the specified page is at the root of the site. The Site navigation text box above the site map displays the path from the home page to the specified page. View the site map from that level by clicking any of the items in the selection path at one time.





to expand and shrink a branch in the site map, click the plus (+) or minus (-) button for the branch. Select several pages in the site map


do one of the following:


from the empty part of the view to drag around a group of files to select them.


Ctrl-click (Windows) or hold down the Command click (Macintosh) to select nonadjacent pages.


hold down SHIFT and click to select a range of adjacent pages. Open a page for editing in a site map


Double-click the file, or right-click (Windows) or hold down the control click (Macintosh) file and choose Open. Add an existing file to the site


Drag a file from Windows Explorer or the Macintosh Finder to a file in the site map, or right-click (Windows) or control-click (Macintosh) on the site map, and then select Link to existing file and Browse to the file. Create a new file and add a link to the site map


Select a file in the site map, or right-click (Windows) or control-click (Macintosh) and select link to new file.


Enter the name, title, and text of the link, and then click OK.


Dreamweaver saves the file in the same folder as the selected file. If you add a new file to the hidden branch directory, the new file is also set to hidden. Modify the title of a page in the site map


Click the Options menu in the upper-right corner of the collapsed Files panel and choose File > Rename View > Show page title to display the page title.


Select a file from the site map, and then do one of the following:


Click the title, and then enter a new caption.





Click the Options menu in the upper-right corner and choose File > Rename.





Type a new name, and then press Enter (Windows) or return (Macintosh).


Note: When you are working in the files panel, Dreamweaver updates all links to files that have changed the name. Update the site map display after making changes


Click anywhere in the site map to deselect any files, and then click Refresh on the Files Panel toolbar. Select the page you want to view.


do one of the following:
