Configure a VPN (L2TP) Server

First, you must ensure that you have installed PPP data packets. In this way, you can find the menu in the console or WinBox interface. You can use the WinBox tool to enable the server to work according to the following steps:

1. Click PPP and select the Secrets tab.

2. Click Plus.

3. Enter the name and password.

4. Enter a local address (such as 1.1.1.1) and a remote address (1.1.1.2 ).

5. Click "OK ".

You can now enable the server. The procedure is as follows:

1. on the PPP Main Window, select the Interface Tab.

2. Click the L2TP server button.

3. Select the enabled check box and click "OK ".

Now, you need to add an IPsec endpoint.The procedure is as follows:

1. Click IP> IPsec and select the Peer tab.

2. Click Plus.

3. Make sure that the Auth Method is a pre-shared key.

4. For Secret, enter a password as the pre-shared key. When configuring Windows, you can enter the password later.

5. Verify that Hash Algorithm is sha, Encryption Algorithm is 3des, and both are Windows default.

6. Select the Generate Policy check box.

Create a network connection in Windows

Now, Windows users can connect to the VPN Server. You must configure a network connection for your computer. The operation steps in the XP system are as follows:

1. Open the network connection window.

2. Double-click the new connection icon to start the creation wizard, and then click "Next ".

3. Select connect to My Workspace and click "Next ".

4. Select VPC connection and click "Next ".

5. Enter the company name, which is also the name of the new connection. Click "Next ".

6. Enter the IP address of the RouterOS server and click "finish ".

7. In the pop-up connection window, click Properties and select the Security tab.

8. Click the IPsec Settings button, select the Use Pre-Shared Key For Authentication check box, enter the same password as when creating the Pre-Shared Key, and then click "OK ".

9. In the Properties window, select the networking tab, and then select the L2TP IPsec VPN option.

10. Click "OK" to save the property changes.

Configure IPsec settings in Windows

You must configure the IPsec settings in the operating system before connecting. Take the XP system as an example:

1. Click "start" menu> Run, enter mmc, and confirm.

2. Click "file" to add an IP Security Policy Management nested management unit> Add/delete a nested Management Unit.

3. In the newly added nested management unit window, select Action> Create IP Security Policy.

4. Click "Next" in the Wizard ".

5. Click "Next" to accept the default name.

6. If you do not select to activate the default response rule, click "Next ".
