There is a very good new feature in Windows XP: Add a read-only attribute to a USB storage device. The implementation method is as follows: Enter Registry Editor, find Hkey_local_ machinesystemcurrentcontrolset controlstoragedevicepolicies item, if not, create a new one, Then create a new DWORD value named Writeprotect in the right window (Figure 1), assign the value of the key to "1", and exit the program or refresh it to take effect.
Later, if you write data to a USB storage device, the dialog box shown in Figure 2 pops up, prompting you to say "media is write-protected" so that you don't have to worry about the important data that you save is being mistakenly manipulated. If you need to unlock a read-only property, just go back to Registry Editor and reassign the Writeprotect value to "0".
