Topology Builder is an installation component of Microsoft Lync Server 2010. Use Topology Builder to display and adjust the topology that you plan. It also validates the topology and, when you are ready to start deployment, can be used to write topologies for your Lync Server 2010 department. When Lync Server 2010 is installed on each server, the server reads the written deployment as part of the installation process, and the installer deploys the server according to the instructions in the topology. This section describes how to prepare and install the Topology Builder and how to use this tool to define a new Enterprise Edition topology, a front-end pool, or a Standard Edition deployment.
After you define a topology, you must publish the topology before you can install Lync Server 2010. However, you must set up the environment before you publish the topology. The topics in this section describe how to use Topology Builder to define topologies, but do not include how to publish topologies. The processes that are required to prepare the production environment and publish the topology are described in the content that follows this deployment document.
1. Topology Builder Installation Requirements
1 Login-Front-End server-ls-fe
2) Run-install
3) Select-Install Topology Builder
2. Defining and configuring topologies
You can use Topology Builder to define and configure topologies. Topology Builder does not require you to be a member of a local Administrators group or a concession domain group (such as Domain Admins). You can define topologies as standard user identities. If you start Topology Builder when you first use and later edit a session, you will be prompted to choose where you want the topology builder to load the current configuration document. The options are as follows:
? Download a topology from an existing deployment
? Exploit the local file
? New topology
If you have defined a topology and set up a central management store, you should choose to download the topology from an existing deployment. Topology Builder reads the database and retrieves the current definition. If you have an existing centrally managed store, you should always select this option.
If you have not established a central management store, and you want to edit a previously saved configuration, you should choose to open the exploit from a local file. The file you want to open is the one that was saved in the previous session. You can use this option to edit a previously saved topology.
Warning:
If you already have a published topology, you should not load the local profile, but you should choose to download the topology from an existing deployment.
If you want to create a new Topology builder configuration, select Create a new topology. The previously saved design will not be overwritten unless you choose to save it as the same file that was created in the previous design session.
In each option, you are prompted to select the location of the storage Topology Builder configuration file. The location of the file can be a local location, a shared location on a file share that has been established, or removable media.
2.1. Defining and configuring topologies in Topology Builder
Running topology Builder to define a new topology or modify an existing topology does not require the membership of a local administrator or an authorized domain group. Depending on your configuration requirements, topology Builder guides you through the steps necessary to define a topology for Enterprise Edition front-end pools or Standard Edition front-end servers.
You must use the Topology Builder to complete and publish the topology before you can install Microsoft Lync Server 2010 on the server. The following procedure contains the steps required to define a new topology.
Defining topologies
1 Start Topology Builder: Click Start, clicking All Programs, and Microsoft Lync Server 2010, and then click Lync Server Topology Builder.
