Asm background process in 11gR2

Reference Original:
ASM Background Processes in 11.2 (Doc ID 1641678.1)

Applicable:
Oracle Database-Enterprise Edition-Version 11.2.0.2 to 11.2.0.4 [Release 11.2]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

1 ASMB-ASM Background Process
Communicates with the asm instance to manage storage and provide statistics.

When the asmcmd cp command is run or when the database is started for the first time (if the server parameter file is stored in the asm disk group), ASMB runs in the asm instance.
The asm process will also run with the ocr (Oracle Cluster Registry) in asm.

2 RBAL-ASM Rebalance Master Process
Coordinate rebalancing activities.
In the asm instance, the Process coordinates the rebalancing activity in the asm disk group and executes a global open (open) operation on the asm disk)
In the database instance, this process manages the asm disk group

3. ARBn-ASM Rebalance Process
Rebalance data extent within an asm Disk
The possible process is ARB0-ARB9 (ARB0, ARB1,...) and ARBA. ---> question: No ARBB? So far as ARBA?

4. DBWR-Database Writer Process
Managing asm buffer cache

5. SMON-System Monitor Process
The system monitors and communicates with the cssd process.

6. CKPT-Checkpoint Process
Manage cross-instance calls in the cluster Environment)

7. PSP0-Process Spawner Process
After the initialization instance is started, other asm background processes are generated.

8. GMON-ASM Disk Group Monitor Process
The GMON process monitors all the mounted asm disk groups in an asm instance.

GMON process completed: maintain the consistency and status information of disk members. This process updates the partner and status table
Adding or dropping disks leads to changes in the member (Membership), while taking disks offline or bringing them online leads to changes in the disk status.

Advances disk group compatibility? No worries ..

9. MARK-Mark AU for Resynchronization Coordinator Process

When the lost write action is written to an offline disk, the process marks the asm allocation unit (allocation units, I .e., au) as stale,

Essentially, the extents of the MARK action tracing need to be re-synchronized to the offline disk.

The process runs in the database instance. When the database instance starts to use the asm instance for the first time, the process is started.
If necessary, when the disk go offline in the asm redundancy disk group, the process can be started as required

10. VKTM-Virtual Keeper of Time Process

This process provides reference time for wall clock time and time interval measurement (reference time)
This process acts as the time publisher of the database instance
The process is released at two times: a wall clock time using a seconds interval and higher resolution time (which is not wall clock time) used for interval measurement)
The VKTM timer service integrates time tracking and reduces multiple timer calls from other clients.

11. LGWR-Log Writer Process
Copy log information to the asm disk group

12. Onnn-ASM Connection Pool Process
Maintain a connection to the asm instance for metadata operations)
Onnn slave processes is generated as required. These processes (Onnn slave processes) Communicate with the asm instance.

Represents the server side in the client/server connection.

These processes are generated when the instance is started and disappear after the instance is started.

13. bnnn-ASM Blocking Slave Process for GMON
Perform maintenance in the asm disk group.

This slave process is used to process offline disks.

The bnnn process is waiting for the resource time table GMON process to execute operations. GMON must be highly available and not waiting.

When a disk in the asm disk is offline, A bnnn slave process is generated.

Execute the offline timer processing and drop disk operations in the slave process.
Based on the load, a maximum of five processes (B000 to B004) can exist.

14. xnnn-ASM Disk Expel Slave Process

Execute the action after asm rebalancing. This process will evict the dropped disk in the final stage of asm rebalancing.

15. VDBG-Volume Driver Process
Respond to the asm request to execute various volume-related tasks.
The VDBG process locks or cancels extent lock requests, volume resize, disk offline, add or drop a disk, force and dismount disk group to the Dynamic Volume Manager driver during rebalancing.

16. VBGn-Volume Background Process
Communication between the asm instance and the OS volume driver.

VBGn processes messages from the OS volume driver and sends these messages to the asm instance.
VBGn can have multiple processes, where n is 0-9
For the mount/dismount operation, it is actually open/close an asm volume

17. VMB Volume Membership Process

Indicates that the ASM volume driver maintains the members in the cluster.
This process membership in the cluster as an I/O-capable client on behalf of the ASM volume driver.
