Tutorial on using Dupeguru to find and remove duplicate files in a Linux system

Brief Introduction

For us, disk loading is one of the thorny issues. No matter how cautious we may be, we can always copy the same files to many different places or, without knowing it, repeatedly download the same file. As a result, sooner or later you will see "Disk full" error prompts, and if we do need some disk space to store important data at this point, the above scenario is the worst. If you are sure that there are duplicate files in your system, then Dupeguru may help you.

The Dupeguru team has also developed a Dupeguru music version of the application to remove duplicate music files, and an application called Dupeguru Picture Edition to remove duplicate picture files.

　　1. Dupeguru (Standard Edition)

People who are unfamiliar with dupeguru need to be told that it is a free, open source, Cross-platform application that uses to find and remove duplicate files in the system. It can be used in Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X platforms. By using a fast fuzzy matching algorithm, it can find duplicate files within a few minutes. At the same time, you can adjust the Dupeguru to pinpoint the duplicate files of a particular file type, and clear a file from the file you want to delete. It supports English, French, German, Chinese (Simplified), Czech, Italian, Armenian, Russian, Ukrainian, Brazilian, and Vietnamese.

Install Dupeguru in Ubuntu 14.10/14.04/13.10/13.04/12.04

Dupeguru developers have built an Ubuntu PPA (Personal Package Archives) to simplify the installation process. To install Dupeguru, type the following command in the terminal:

sudo apt-get install Dupeguru-se

Use

Very simple to start Dupeguru from the Unity Panel or menu.

Click the + button at the bottom to add the file directory you want to scan. Click on the Scan button to start looking for duplicate files.

Once the selected directory contains duplicate files, it will display duplicate files in the window. As you can see, in the screenshot below, I have a duplicate file in my download directory.

Now, you can decide what to do next. You can delete this duplicate file, or rename it, or copy/move it to another location. To do this, select the duplicate file, or select the "Show Duplicates only" option in the menu bar, and if you select the "Show Duplicates only" option, only duplicate files will be visible in the window, so you can easily select and delete the files. Click the "Action" drop-down menu, and finally select the action you will perform. Here, I just want to delete the duplicate file, so I chose the "Move tag file to trash" option.

Next, click on the "Continue" option to remove the duplicate file.

　　2. Dupeguru Music Edition

Dupeguru music or short Dupeguru ME, it functions like Dupeguru. It has all the features of Dupeguru, but it contains more information columns (such as bitrate, duration, tags, etc.) and more scan types (such as file names with fields, tags, and audio content). Like Dupeguru, Dupeguru ME is also running in Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X.

It supports a wide variety of formats, such as MP3, WMA, AAC (iTunes format), OGG, FLAC, and the AAC and WMA formats with less distortion.

Now, we don't have to add any PPA, because in the previous steps we've added them. So type the following command in the terminal to install it:

Use

You can start it from the Unity panel or the menu. The Dupeguru ME uses a method, an operating interface, and looks similar to the normal Dupeguru. Add the directory you want to scan and select the action you want to perform. Duplicate music files will be deleted.

　　3. Dupeguru Picture version

Dupeguru picture version, or Duepguru PE, is a tool to find duplicate images in your computer. It is similar to Dupeguru, but uniquely matches the function of repeating pictures. Dupeguru PE can be run in Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X.

Dupeguru PE supports image formats such as JPG, PNG, TIFF, GIF, and BMP. All of these formats can be compared at the same time. The Mac OS X version of Dupeguru PE also supports PSD and RAW (CR2 and NEF) formats.

Install Dupeguru PE in Ubuntu 14.10/14.04/13.10/13.04/12.04

Since we have already added the PPA, we do not have to add it again for Dupeguru PE. Simply run the following command to install it.

Use

It is similar to Dupeguru,dupeguru ME in terms of the method, the operating interface, and the appearance. I wonder why developers have developed different versions for different categories. I think it would be better if you were to develop an application that combines the three versions of the above features.

Start it, add the directory you want to scan, and select the action you want to perform. In this way, your duplicate files will be cleared.

If you cannot remove some duplicate files because of any security issues, make a note of the location of these files and manually delete them through the terminal or File Manager.
