With the decrease in hard disk prices and the increase in software installation, many people have adopted the method of adding a hard disk to increase the storage capacity. However, the installation of dual hard disks is relatively simple, but there are many things to consider. Based on my own practice, the author puts forward the following points of attention.

1. There are two ide interfaces on the motherboard. Up to four ide devices can be installed. Before installing a dual hard disk, you must first determine whether there is a second hard disk installation location in the chassis and whether the power supply is sufficient.

2. If you install the two hard disks on both data cables, you are advised to set them to the primary disk. If two hard disks are installed on the same data cable due to restrictions, they should be set to the master disk and slave disk respectively. You can use either of the following methods to set a master or slave Disk:

(1) Hard Disk jumper settings: the hard disk usually uses a set of jumpers to determine the settings of the master and slave disks. This set of jumper usually consists of 3 sets (6 or 7) needles or 4 sets (8 or 9) needles plus 1 ~ These two jumpers are usually located between the power socket and the data cable connection socket. In addition, the Front (or back) of each hard disk is printed with jumper methods and labeling instructions for the master, slave, and cableselect.

(2) the hard disk jumper and 40-core special data cable are used in combination with the settings: In addition to setting the "cable selection" mode in the hard disk jumper, the hard disk master and slave status are also determined by the connection plug between the hard disk and the hard disk data cable. The 40-core hard disk data cable that determines the hard disk master and slave status is specially made. Generally, the primary disk is used to connect to the middle of the hard disk data line, and the disk connected to the end plug of the hard disk data line is the slave disk. When you use this method to set the master and slave disks, you must first set all the IDE interface devices (including optical drives) that are connected to the same hard disk data cable to the "cable selection" position, then, connect the master and slave disks to the corresponding hard disk data cable plug based on the actual situation.

3. compatibility issues sometimes occur when hard disks of different brands are used on the same hard disk data cable. Therefore, when adding a hard disk, try to prioritize the hard disk of the same brand. If the computer cannot detect or only detects one of the hard disks at startup, You can disconnect the original hard disk before confirming that the Jumper settings of both hard disks are correct, then reboot the instance. If the computer can detect the added hard disk, it indicates that there is a problem with the compatibility between the two hard disks.

4. if the added hard disk and the optical drive are connected to a hard disk data cable at the same time, you must note that the master and slave disk settings of the optical drive and other devices do not conflict with the added hard disk settings, otherwise, the hard disk cannot be detected on the motherboard or the original optical drive cannot be found.

5. when two hard disks are installed in a large number of partitions, the drive letter may sometimes be staggered. To solve this problem, the drive letter will not change after the two hard disks are installed, A very convenient solution is to set the slave disk to none in CMOS, which can be used normally in windows, but cannot be recognized from the hard disk in pure DOS state. Another solution is to delete the primary partition of the hard disk and set only the extended partition to prevent the drive letter from being staggered.

6. When installing a dual hard disk, you must note that the gap between the two hard disks should not be too small, but also pay attention to the heat dissipation of the chassis to prevent the hard disk from working properly due to the high temperature.

Note: Hard Disk boot priority (Hard Disk boot sequence ):
You can select the hard disk boot priority for this project. Press the key to go to its sub-menu, which will display the hard disk that has been detected to allow you to choose the boot sequence, to start the system. Of course, this option can be selected only when you have installed two or more systems!

2. Precautions for users who use two or more hard disks at the same time
Most of these users have a hard disk, and then they are adding large-capacity hard disks due to disk space, you must re-check the hard disk after Correctly Setting the Jumper and parameters of the hard disk, especially when the Master/Slave disk changes. Otherwise, it may not start from the hard disk. If this type of user is only used in DOS, it must set several hard disk parameters and drive letters in CMOS. When using Win9x for operating the system, you only need to set the primary hard disk correctly and then you can use the two hard disks normally. It is not important to set the second hard disk. However, if two hard disks are correctly set, the drive letter sequence in Win9x is as follows: 1. Primary boot partition of the primary hard disk; 2. Primary boot partition of the secondary disk. 3. logical partitions in the extended partitions of the primary disk. 4. logical partitions in the extended partitions of a disk. 2. When the primary hard disk is set but the slave disk is not set, the drive letter sequence of the hard disk is 1. Primary partition of the primary Hard Disk 2. Logical partition in the extended partition of the primary hard disk 3. Slave Disk primary partition 4. Logical partition in the extended partition of the slave disk. When changing the drive letter may cause some programs to fail due to the change of the drive letter, they will not be able to raise their father to the pool, that is, they will be able to make the tan Zhi ye, that is, they will be very stupid. the first boot suquence is set to ide n (n = 1 ~ Number of IDE devices supported by the main board). Set the award CMOS to C (D, E, F), CDROM, A, and so on to select the operating system. In this way, you can start multiple operating systems without installing any special software.

The settings in my CMOS are as follows:
The primary master [none]
The primary slave [xxxxxxx]
The second Master [xxxdvdxxxx]
The second slave [none]
The specific characters in the brackets are incomplete, so we have to replace them with X. The second line should be the hard disk. How can I set this hard disk in the first line?

(MASTER ??
Thank you !!!

Primary and secondary are of primary importance for the IDE channel, while the former is secondary.
Master and slave are relative to the sequence in the same ide channel. The former is the master disk and the latter is the slave disk.
The boot sequence is written by yourself. Generally, there are only two ide channels in the computer, and the hard drive and the optical drive are connected to the IDE channel.

In general, the system hard disk is connected to the primary master, and the optical drive is connected to the secondary master, but it also depends on the specific situation.

Some motherboard only has one ide interface, so you can connect the hard disk to the primary master, and the optical drive to the primary slave.
Currently, most newly installed computers use SATA hard disks and do not need ide interfaces. Therefore, you can directly connect the optical drive to the primary master,

This is most conducive to accelerating system startup.

You have two methods for dual Hard Disk: one is the hard disk jumper to set the Master/Slave disk. All ide devices, including hard disks, use a set of jumpers to determine the master and slave status after installation. Most hard disk Jumpers are set between the electrical source connection socket and the data cable connection socket (also located on the circuit board), usually composed of three groups (6 or 7) A needle or four groups of (8 or 9) needles plus one or two patch caps. In addition, the front or back of the hard disk must also contain the master, slave, and cableselect jumper methods, you can refer to the Jumper diagram on the back of the hard disk for jumper .. 2 hard drive jumper and 40-core Special hard drive line together to determine.
The master and slave disk are set to "select valid cable", and then connect the master and slave disks to the corresponding hard drive plug as needed. The hard disk master and disk status are determined by the connection plug between the hard disk and the hard disk. Generally, the disk connected to the middle part of the hard drive line is the master disk, and the disk connected to the end of the hard drive line is the slave disk. When you use this method to set the master and slave disks, you must set all the IDE interface devices (including optical drives) that are connected to the same hard drive line to the "cable selection" position.

The 40-core hard disk line can determine the disk master and slave disk status. The general 40-core hard drive line (starting from 28th red lines or other marks) is cut off between two hard drive plugs, note that other lines cannot be broken during tangent. It is convenient to use a dedicated hard drive cable to determine the status of the master and slave disks. When you need to switch the hard drive master and slave status, you only need to reset the connected hard drive plug position. You do not need to remove the hard drive to re-jumper.
Also, when you use a dual hard disk, there will be Drive drive errors. Otherwise, after you have installed the dual hard disk and re-installed the system from scratch, there will be no drive errors, you only need to run the fdisk partition hard disk, and the formatting and installation system will be OK. In order to save the data on the original hard disk, the system will not be reinstalled from scratch, instead, you can upgrade the disk to a dual hard disk system, or use the second hard disk as a data backup. The most common problem after the dual hard disk is "Drive drive disorder ", that is to say, after the second hard disk is installed, drive D Drive. For example, your original hard disk is divided into two areas C and D in ide1, while the new hard disk is divided into C, D, and E in ide2. After installing a dual hard disk and correctly setting two hard disk parameters in CMOS, check "my computer ", all the content in Area D of the old hard disk is now in Area E, and Area D is the first area of the second hard disk. The specific distribution of each partition is as follows: area C (old hard disk), Area D (New Hard Disk), area E (old hard disk), Area F (New Hard Disk), and area G (New Hard Disk ). In this way, the drive letter is changed, so that all the software installed on the old hard disk D zone cannot be used.

There are two solutions: If you only use Win98, it is relatively simple. Set the second hard disk to none in CMOS, but do not recognize the second hard disk in pure dos. The second method is to re-partition the second hard disk after connecting to the dual hard disk, delete the primary DOS partition, and only split the extended partition. In this way, the drive letter will not be staggered. Of course, if the first hard disk has only one partition, there is no problem of drive character staggered. I used the second method to install dual hard disks in my house.
In addition, try to select hard disks of the same brand as possible. When the newly added hard disks are connected to secondary hard disks along with optical drives and other devices, note that the master and slave disk settings of the optical drive and other devices do not conflict with the new hard drive. Otherwise, the new hard drive cannot be detected on the motherboard or the original optical drive cannot be found.
