According to a message posted on his Blog yesterday by Mark Shuttleworth, the Ubuntu creator, Canonical made a major decision to enable OpenGL-based Wayland as X Server in the future, ubuntu's self-developed desktop environment, Unity, will also run on Wayland. Of course, because Wayland is still a relatively new technology, Ubuntu 11.04 will still use the X.org Server. If the time is right, the new display management system may be deployed on Ubuntu 11.10.
Wayland is a brand new X Server that uses many cutting-edge technologies such as GEM, KMS, DRI2, and EGL. The first Linux release to deploy this technology is Intel's MeeGo, however, in the desktop release field, no release has yet adopted this technology. In addition, Mark promises to be able to run the existing X program in the compatible mode, so it will not have too much impact on the overall architecture of desktop software.
I personally think that this decision is bold and significant and will play a decisive role in the future development of Ubuntu and Wayland. It seems that Ubuntu's goal is to create a different version from other releases, instead, it is a desktop release with more customized features. The style may be closer to adopting the BSD kernel and a large number of open-source technologies, while the UI is a self-developed MacOS X.
