The latest release of Ubuntu has made a lot of changes to the GNOME desktop, including adding application indicators, Messaging Menu, and MeMenu. These changes were not fed back to the upstream GNOME, they only appear in Ubuntu 10.04. Is Ubuntu intended to develop GNOME branches? With this question, Der Standard interviewed Jono Bacon, Ubuntu community manager.
Jono Bacon denies the Ubuntu program branch GNOME, indicating that all source code changes are open source and can be used or modified by anyone. Taking the application indicator as an example, it is based on the freeyuntop.org specification, KDE provides consultation, Ubuntu invites GNOME developers to participate in the Freedesktop discussion, and proposes to the GNOME community to join, however, the upstream integration decision has nothing to do with the downstream Ubuntu. This is also true for other releases. For example, Novell developed its own Main Menu Using Slab.
