Canonical specializes in legal research, including discussions with the Software Freedom legal counsel in the industry, these discussions and research are mainly aimed at the license issue between the Linux kernel and the ZFS file system.

Through research and discussion, we believe that adding ZFS support to the Ubuntu core complies with the terms and rights of the two project licenses.

Both the GPLv2 license for Linux kernel and the CDDL license for ZFS are copyleft licenses, which have different terms and conditions. CDDL targets all its own files, while GPLv2 targets derivatives.

CDDL cannot be applied to the Linux kernel, because zfs. ko is a self-container file system module, and the kernel itself is obviously not a derivative of the new file system.

Our conclusion is good news for Ubuntu users, good news for Linux, and good news for free and open source software.

We have reached this conclusion, and we are not interested in continuing to argue about license compatibility. However, we welcome you to discuss the application opportunities of these technologies.
