If you want to build an internal or private cloud, Canonical wants you to choose Ubuntu 10.04 as the operating system. This latest Ubuntu version contains a set of functions called the Ubuntu enterprise cloud.

Traditionally, the Ubuntu enterprise cloud is integrated with the open-source Eucalyptus private cloud platform, which reduces the steps of first installing Linux, then installing Eucalyptus, and finally configuring the private cloud. In addition, for public cloud users, Ubuntu/Eucalyptus is also compatible with Amazon EC2 public cloud.

Note: You must take the time to get familiar with Ubuntu and Eucalyptus, because you cannot find a solution for many problems. For example, we found that the Ubuntu documentation rarely describes user-defined images, this is an important step for deploying Ubuntu enterprise cloud.

Basically, the Ubuntu enterprise cloud can be deployed on the hardware that runs jobs/batch processing applications within the enterprise. The initial idea was to allocate storage and then quickly create multiple virtual machines to process data, collect data and then push down the infrastructure for reuse later.

Ubuntu enterprise cloud provides an internal cloud control method similar to Amazon's public cloud infrastructure. Its tools can be used to process periodic jobs or one-time distributed applications, such as DNA analysis, video rendering, or reformat or recreate the index in the database table.

Ubuntu enterprise cloud uses an open-source kernel-based Virtual Machine Platform (KVM) to host virtual machines. This is very important because the images provided by Eucalyptus include both KVM and Xen kernel, however, if you use Ubuntu enterprise cloud, you must use KVM.

Start

To successfully run the Ubuntu enterprise cloud, we need at least two dedicated systems, one for front-end applications, including cloud controllers, cluster controllers, Walrus controllers, and storage controllers, other systems become a node that can host virtual machines.

The Controller service is well understood. www.linuxidc.com is very similar to Amazon EC2 cloud components. Ubuntu enterprise Cloud Controller is a front-end service application that needs to be connected to for cloud service management, it supports calling EC2 APIs and provides a Web user interface.

The cluster controller manages the resources of each cluster node (VM) and communicates with each node/VM through the open-source libvrt library. How many virtual machines can be hosted on a given hardware platform, canonical also has baseline recommendations.

The Walrus controller plays a role similar to Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service). The Ubuntu enterprise cloud storage controller is similar to Amazon's Elastic Block Storage (EBS, continuous virtual disks can be attached to running instances to activate resource storage virtualization control. For ease of management, each cluster has a storage controller.

Install

The installation process is very simple. Insert the Ubuntu server CD and select Ubuntu enterprise cloud. During the installation process, you only need to simply select or enter the host name, IP address range, and other easy-to-understand content.

The installer automatically creates certificates, keys, private keys, and other related data. If you install Eucalyptus independently, most parameters need to be set manually.

Next, run the installation program on the node. If both machines are on the same network, the node will automatically discover the cluster and the Cloud Controller, although it can be installed on a single machine, however, Ubuntu does not recommend this in the production environment.

Configuration

Most of the configuration information is set during installation. You can also connect to the Ubuntu enterprise cloud Web interface. The default administrator user password is admin/admin. You can change the user password, or email address, name, and other information.

After completing the settings, we can download a zip file, including our creden (X.509 Certificate, public/private key pair), which are compatible with Amazon EC2 tools. At the same time, you can also obtain a query ID and security key. We recommend that you use the HybridFox plug-in of Firefox for management.

To reduce power consumption, we can disable unused nodes and enable them when necessary. After the node is set, the controller can remotely switch on and off the machine as needed, we must enable the "Wake up via LAN" function for each node.

In addition, the server hosting host must support at least the following common Linux power management commands: pm-suspend, pm-hibernate or poweroff. By default, if the node is not used for more than five minutes, it will be automatically shut down using one of the above commands.

For this reason, we conducted a special test. We did shut down automatically five minutes later. Then we tried to load a new instance and the machine started up automatically.
