The long-awaited Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal" was finally released today! Ubuntu 11.04 has undergone drastic changes because the Unity interface has become the default desktop experience environment for Ubuntu users. However, the Classic Gnome Desktop option is retained.
Let's take a look at the major changes in the new version compared with Ubuntu 10.10, and what happened to Natty development in the past six months.
Unity interface and Ubuntu 11.04 Overview
The Unity interface was originally developed for the Ubutnu 10.10 netbook version. It is based on Mutter, just like the Gnome Shell. However, for this new version, the Ubuntu netbook version has been abandoned, and there is no separate desktop or netbook version, it is only "Ubuntu ". Unity has also been transplanted from Mutter to Compiz, and has become more robust, faster, and more stable, overcoming the limitations of Mutter.
Unity-2D will be their default desktop experience environment for netbooks and other devices that cannot accelerate 3D hardware. Unity-2d is based on a faster and lighter Qt/Qml framework.
Ubuntu 11.04 still does not use the Gnome 3 stack, but still uses Gnome 2.32.1. But in the future, introducing Gnome 3 stacks should be a top priority. The Gnome shell does not appear in the official Ubuntu software library, so users cannot get the Gnome shell option as the default Interface. However, there is a Gnome 3 PPA (Personal installation package archiving). You can install the entire Gnome 3 stack, including the Gnome shell, to Ubuntu 11.04 through PPA.
Ubuntu 11.04 includes Linux kernel 2.6.38, Xserver 1.10, and Gnome 2.32.1 stacks. The new default applications include Firefox 4, LibreOffice 3.3.2, and Banshee 2.0.
