Ubuntu12.04 Telnet Service Settings

Ubuntu12.04 The Telnet service is not enabled by default, the steps to configure the Telnet service are as follows:

1. Installation and Configuration

Install openbsd-inetd:
#sudo Apt-get Install openbsd-inetd


Install telnetd:
#sudo Apt-get Install telnetd


You can see this line in the etc/inetd.conf file:
Telnet Stream TCP nowait root/usr/sbin/tcpd/usr/sbin/in.telnetd
If you do not have this line of content, add it manually.


Restart OPENBSD-INETD
#/etc/init.d/openbsd-inetd restart


View Telnet Run status
#netstat-A | grep telnet
Output: TCP 0 0 *:telnet *:* LISTEN

2. Testing the Telnet service

On the Windows command line, enter: Telnet 192.168.1.122 (virtual machine IP)
Follow the prompts to enter the user name and password to enter (non-root user)
